Saw this post on facebook Just keep making sure that your elite, wealthy and exclusive little club of theatergoers keeps hard-working, culture-loving single-mothers like myself (or, from poorer backgrounds like the very subject of Hamilton, itself). No fear, we will not show up because we are unable to pay $120 per seat.

No fear, someone will show up who is able to pay $120 per seat.

A reasonable price for a ticket is exactly how much someone is willing to pay for it.

Ugh those types of "woe is me" posts annoy me.

The theater goers aren't to blame, only those that set the prices. But that's the way the economy works...Is the Lion King expensive? Yep, but people are shelling out the money. Also, you don't need to see a ton of live shows to be cultured. I'm a broke college kid. I save my money and see maybe 3-4 shows a year. Are the seats great?? Nope, but theater is a deep love of mine, and I attend for more than just a cultural experience.

If you want to become theatrically cultured, read about shows, learn the history behind them, and watch the countless amount of videos on YouTube. To me, that's being more culturally aware than merely saying ..."yeah, I saw a bunch of shows... not sure what half of them were about."

Ultimately, it's just that way too many Americans don't understand the difference between a right and a privilege.

Is there anyone on this forum who actually believes "cheap" tickets should be a right? Student discounts for a lot of art access is one thing, but in general? And I put "cheap" in quotes because what's affordable to one person is still not to another.

I find this kind of funny because what other type of show or sporting event offers the discounts that Broadway does which includes RUSH tickets to shows for $20. You can see shows for reasonable price if you find discounts to what you want to see. It may not always be the best seats but people who are not rich can still enjoy Broadway.

And those Damn Yankee (the team, not the show) tickets are waaaay too expensive, too! They should charge $20 so I can go and take my kids with me, too.

Actually the Yankees are offering rush tickets to all games this year. You still pay $150 but you get to rush from the stadium in disgust after seeing the pathetic team they are going to be putting on the field this season.

Yes, tickets are more expensive. But discounts are often plentiful. Unfortunately, many ticketbuyers demand center orchestra seats on the aisle in the first five rows and settle for nothing less- and I say this as someone who once had to sell those tickets.

I think the points are well taken. The prices do make for an elite and wealthy(ier) audience. It's true. And free market capitalism incentivizes charging as much as you can and income disparity grows and grows. It's just a fact.

And big time professional theater goes out of the reach of many more citizens than it should. It's a shame.

The Yankees do offer bleacher seats which are around $20. They also do have discounts throughout the year. You just have to do some research in order to find discounts.

It's so funny people think they are entitled to experience the best theater district in the world. Nope. Remind your fb friend that life isn't fair. I also love that she mentions being a mother like that wasn't her choice. Lolz.

Very rarely do I end up paying full price for a show. Especially with alternatives such as TDF, TodayTix, company programs, and Rush, society has tried to make theatregoing more affordable for people who can't pay +$100. But, a lot of these discounts don't come without you having to put effort into taking advantage of them. Theatre is expensive to maintain because operating costs are TREMENDOUS. If theatre was cheap, you would probably be getting a cheap experience. On average, I probably pay $70 per show that I see, some of which I see for as little as $25.

"Mostly, I loved the size of these people's emotions. Nobody has emotions this size anymore. Outsized emotions. Operatic emotions. Kushemski and Vanda are like Tristan and Isolde, they're Paolo and Francesca. Nobody's in total thrall like this anymore. Nobody's overcome by passion like this, or goes through this kind of rage." Premium pricing makes me angry, but I have paid it a few times. More often than not, I skip the show.

Somewhat unrelated, I just heard yesterday that Disney has raised the admission price to the parks. It is now $99 per person...

I see up to 3 shows a week, never spend more than $75 a ticket. you just gotta know how to work the system.

Most of the time I end up with comps from various shows as a thank you for the catering we do.

I agree that Premium pricing can make one "angry." The only way that will ever end is when those seats remain empty. Which will probably never happen. Supply and demand is what it is... and yes, thankfully, there are many ways to get a discounted ticket. I haven't paid full price for anything in years. (I suspect that HAMILTON will break that streak, but I really want to see that.)

As for the Disney increase... it is now $105 for the Magic Kingdom and $99 for the other 3 parks in Florida. Again, supply and demand, as WDW is seeing record crowds for the past couple of years and enjoys an amazing YEAR ROUND hotel occupancy rate. That said, the more days you go, the cheaper it is... go for 5 days and it is $63/day. And that is for all day entertainment...And just like Broadway, Disney offers significant discounts year round on tickets,(also food and lodging) and at many price points. You just have to research and shop around.
