Don't worry, like everything else, it'll be back in probably 10 or so years :)

I hope Millie does not close for a very long time.

I don't think Aida will close soon...at least not until this awful popstar invasion is over.
I really hope RENT doesn't either but it's capacity has been pretty awful lately. Lets hope it's just because of winter and all and it will pick up later!!
I think Anna and the Tropics will be next.

Sheekala, I know what you mean! Sometimes I deliberatly walk the extra block just to pass by the Shurbert Theatre and take a glance! I just love the Gypsy poster colors! I'm sure going to miss it!
I hope "Wonderful Town sticks around - it's the next on my "to see" list!
This is hard.. the obvious ones are Anna in the Tropics and The Retreat from Moscow (what are the producers of Anna on>!).. On the musicals front, it looks like Aida, 42nd Street, and Rent are all in trouble. Wonderful Town is right on the edge.. Im guessing 425,000 isnt far from the break even, so they will keep it open till Tony time.
As I posted in another thread, I think it would be smart for the producers of Rent to put up a closing notice, get the business it needs for the winter by getting all the groupies back, and then taking it down in March.
I think I might die if RENT closes. Seriously, I think I'd die.
Maybe it's just the winter. Look at Aida and 42nd street. Those are both good shows that are struggling. By the spring I'm sure they'll all be okay and I don't have to worry about my beloved RENT closing.
Who is Kristen Lee Kelly playing? Will she be back as her original role as Mark's mom?

Rent
Anna in the Tropics although I wonder if there are royalty/rent waivers in place for the moment to lower the operating cost.
I bet there are some kind of waivers in place for a whole slew of shows that are marginal. If a show grosses less-than-breakeven the royalties could be waived. Aida, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop and Chicago all took big hits last week in the cash drawer.
Keep in mind one basic tenet of Broadway. All shows close.
AIDA-I doubt AIDA will close. It usually does very well in the BO and this is the first time that it has done poorly, obviously because of the weather. For them to close it would just be stupid.
RENT-I also think that RENT is reaching the end of its rope. I'm just hoping they'll do something special for its closing. Not that the current cast isn't talented, but they have their good nights, and then they have their...well...less-than-inspiring nights, to be overly kind. It would be so cool if they could bring back the OBC for the final performance or something, but the chances of that are less than zero. Still, if a closing notice is posted for RENT, it will most likely extend because of all the business it will receive (come on, RENTheads!). I agree with Benzy that the producers should probably do this to help RENT sail through the hard season, and then extend it a couple months or so. But RENT is my favorite musical, and I don't want to see them drag it out like some kind of joke.
MILLIE-Millie is not going to close after Sutton leaves. She was amazing, yes, but not a big name yet. Tourists who see Millie usually don't go just for Sutton, they go for the show.
If there was a notice that RENT was closing, I'd see every show between the time the notice was put up and the closing date.
I know, I'm obsessed.
I'd say "Anna" as well. Little Shop is at a very low capacity. If they don't get a star in there soon, it's going to go sooner than later too. Aida isn't going anywhere as long as there are low-rent ex-popstars lurking around. Updated On: 2/3/04 at 07:33 PM
I think Anna in the Tropics is next, if not very soon. As far as musicals... I don't know. Aida won't close for a while. Disney's got money to keep it going. And as much as I hate to say it, I really do hope Rent survives. I love it, but it is struggling.

ALL THESE SHOWS HAVE DONE JUST AS BAD AS GYPSY HAS IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS...AND AS THE PRODUCERS OF GYPSY SAID "The weather has played a severe role in the grosses of this show...so we have decided to close it"
WE CAN SAY THE SAME THING ABOUT ALL OF THE SHOWS LISTED ABOVE...Honestly I feel a lot of those are great shows...And I do feel that they will pick back up in the next few weeks. I also feel strongly about Gypsy...It will pick back up...I can't believe the dumb producers don't have that much faith in the show, bernadette, and the rest of the cast...
PrincessMimiChica, I am really tired of you. I know I am not the only one to have told you this before, but you don't need to defend RENT EVERY SINGLE TIME. This question is open to everyone's opinion and if you negate everything everyone says about RENT, it's going to get REAL old REAL fast. I'm sorry if that aounds harsh, but it's the truth.
Another thing is, do you know every RENTHead in the world? No. So please, please, do not speak for everyone when you say:
"But I do have to comment on this "bare" thing: Bare will never, ever compare or be equal to RENT. Ever. And I couldn't dissagree more about it making RENT look more dated. And personally, I don't know any RENTheads who would "convert", but, whatever."
You can't speak for anyone but yourself. Besides have you heard any of the music?
Cheers,

Why do I get the feeling that when RENT finally does post a closing notice, that Princess will refute it and say it is not true and will still be trying to buy rush tickets while they cart the set out past her?
Oh dear. I'm afraid these comparisons between Rent and bare
are going to be inevitable...and bare hasn't even gone into rehearsal yet. Both have four letter titles, and deal with disenfranchised young people, but they really diverge from there. Stocking the two shows up against each other is really unfair to both shows.

and here I thought I was actually going to stay out of this thread...I am such a glutton for punishment! Oh well, here I go:
Listen, I have nothing against bare at all. I became framiliar with it during it's original L.A. run and I LIKE some of the music!! I'm not saying it's a bad show, and i've kept a very open mind about it. The problem is, all these comparisons it's getting to RENT are very irritating, and really, that's whats turning me off about this show. RENT is not bare, and bare is not RENT.
MyNameinLights, maybe if you reread my post, you'll see that I was expressing MY opinion, and never claimed to speak for everyone. For ME, bare will never be equal to RENT, because they are not the same show. So the comment about "all RENTheads will convert" is just stupid. I said that PERSONALLY, I don't know anyone who will "convert". IT IS possible to love RENT AND bare, or to like RENT and NOT bare, or to like bare but not RENT!! See, this is what's called expressing opinions and having an open mind =) I can defend RENT all I want, why should it matter to you? I'm not the only one here who defends and raves about her favorite show. If you're sick of me, that's fine, I don't really care; but I do have some great friends here, so, not every single person shares your opinion =)
I've said this in another thread, But I just thin kthis threads just create all kinds of bad vibes and I don't like it. Why I keep posting on these threads, i'll never know. What good does it do anyone to speculate about what will close and when? Nobody can know. We all know that many shows are in trouble, so let's just leave it at that. The next time a closing notice goes up, then we can start the discussion all over again.
Whew, I feel better =) ::steps down off soapbox:::

bernadette88, How do you figure that Avenue Q should be on this list of yours? It played to 83% last week and 87% the week before. Gypsy was at 53% and 48%. Check your facts.

Bare: A Pop Opera
It tells the coming of age tale of a group of students ina Catholic School. It enjoyed a successful run in LA before and is now booked for off-Broadway.. with a better cast in my opinion (does anyone matter but Adam? NO.)
Here is a link to the Bare site. It includes the cast list and bios for the LA run though....

TKTS---How can you figure that Gypsy should close, when it is ten times better than Gypsy, and that after this weather goes away Gypsy will sky-rockets to where it was before! So yes, I feel that if they are closing Gypsy because of the weather and decline of ticket sales, then they should close Avenue Q...I feel the show is very good! But Gypsy is better, and that neither show should close...If that makes sense??:)
It does not make sense. How is Gypsy ten times better than itself?

bernadette88...huh? Where in my post did I say Gypsy should close? I was just pointing out how utterly silly your statement that Avenue Q should close is. Do you understand the term "show business"? No business, no show. I don't care how good the show is that's how it works.
