What is the general consensus when it comes to Saved? It is something that I want to see. And, I know that the casting doesn't work in terms of the age of the characters and the age of the actors playing them. I am a big Celia fan and enjoyed seeing her in Les Miserables and Julia is an actress that I have wanted to see in something but never got the chance to.
Despite the show having a good cast ( that doesn't fit the ages of the characters they are playing) is it still a good show and worth seeing?

Posted: 5/27/08 at 7:22pmAs i said on another thread, why is the age of the cast a problem?, shows with teen characters (Fame, Footloose, Grease, Bye Bye Birdie etc) have been casting people older for years, why it such a big deal with this show?

When the age difference and age-appearance between those characters playing parents and those playing kids makes them virtually indistinguishable age-wise, it's a problem.
It was...cute. Would I have been happy had I paid full-price and not student rush price? No.

It is a problem when the two actresses playing the mother/daughter are and look close to age in real life.

Posted: 5/27/08 at 7:29pmI only paid 5 bucks and it was painful. and the age issue is HUGE. When you have characters played by actors who look old enough to be the mother of their own character there's a problem.

Posted: 5/27/08 at 7:30pmI think the general consensus is that the show is not as good as it could be given the material it had to work with. I's mediocre and needs more work.

I mean I might have the chance to get a ticket for this as a gift. Even if I am not paying for the show I want it to be a good one because I feel that that would be a waste of a gift.
I know the age thing is a big issue and major flaw in the show. But, I can be able to ignore it and not let that bother me.

I really wanted to like it, and other than Morgan Weed, I really just couldn't. Personally I don't plan to go back.
But if it's free for you... Though...do you get a choice in what you see as your gift??

I just dont see the big deal but maybe thats just me.I know ive done shows in London when i was playing a kid (supposed to be 14 to 18 and was 26, whilst the guy playing the teacher is 27),Or the last play i did where a girl playing a 16 year old was 24 and the lady playing her mother was 27.None of the critics seemed to care.
The way i see it is that in musicals you are asked to suspend disbelief anyway when someone bursts in to song so i dont see that someone being a few years too old to play a role should be a big deal

I want to see this due to the fact that it has Celia and Julia in it and because I am curious about it.
Does anyone know if there are any clips of the songs online.

The age thing is just part of the problem. It's mediocre at best.
Winston, if it's free for you and you're that curious, just go and form your own opinion. It seems like you've answered your own question.

Well, Julia gets very little to do, and doesn't get to sing very much at all, save for two songs, one of which is awful. So, don't go expecting her to blow you away. She's a great actress and singer, but doesn't get the opportunity to show it here.
The age of the cast is a problem when some members of the cast look appropriately young, and others look much older. They either needed to cast them all young, or all older. The mix doesn't work.

To me it was pleasant and cute, and there were some fun moments, but it totally lost a lot of the relationships the characters had in the movie.
They spent too much time stretching out the roles of weaker characters (Dean, Patrick, the parents) at the expense of Mary becoming friends with Cassandra & Roland, and even the Mary/Hillary Faye relationship wasnt there as much as it should have been.
The cast is amazing, but I think the creative team made it more of a complete ensamble when its not best suited to be one. I mean Thea had as much stage time as Roland.

Posted: 5/27/08 at 9:46pmI really enjoyed myself. It's not perfect by any stretch of the way and there's a lot that needs to be improved, but I had a good time. And all of the actors, with the exception of John Dossett, give great performances. In my opinion, it was a fun time at the theater and better than some of the stuff that is currently run/has been in New York lately.

Is it perfect? No. Does it still need some work? Sure.Is it ready for an open end run? Not yet.
Did I have a great time? Yes. It was fun and entertaining. I like most of the performances.
At times it was uneven and I really disliked the set. It was not used to it's fullest and I wish to god that someone could explain the "skateboard-like" ramp that in not used.
The age of the characters did not really bother me.

Posted: 5/28/08 at 12:43amI might have to agree with folky on the "hot tranny mess." That is probably the best way to put it. Honestly, when I saw it I didn't notice the age thing at all. However, I didn't enjoy the show. It had a few chuckle moments but I found the majority of the songs unmemorable and I found myself bored at times. I had the same feeling about the cast as a lot of people here have stated. I think some of them are really great but they just were not given good material to work with.

the Age thing wasn't an issue for me either.
the bad songs were.
I actually still liked it and the show has potential but it still needs a LOT of work.
but the cast and the choreography "saved" it all.
