A friend and I are going to be in NYC May 21st through the 25th, and are wondering if there is anything Off-Broadway that is worth seeing. So, if you had to recommend one Off-Broadway show what would it be?
"Leave Walt Disney Theatricals new sparkling production of The Little Mermaid on Broadway alone!!!"

I thought Rooms was 'aaaaaight. Made me sleepy in places. Kritzer is always worth the price of admission though.
I loved Happiness. Really amazing, especially Jenny Powers.

Posted: 3/3/09 at 8:02pmWithout reservations.....one show I would recommend is: KASPER HAUSER, which is playing at the Flea Theatre. The Bat Players are the primary cast and they are just amazing performers. I guess The Flea Theatre would be considered off-off Broadway as it is in Tribeca, but I still highly recommend this musical.

Posted: 3/3/09 at 9:30pmYou can get 10 dollar tickets to ROOMS...so you can see more than one show. That's the same amount as a movie ticket.

Posted: 3/3/09 at 9:41pmI'm hearing that while CORINE'S CORNER is spiraling into development hell, TOO DARN HOT: THE STAGE EXPERIENCE is hot on its heels! Featuring such standards as "PiraguaGuy, We All Know You're Gay", "How Dare You Call Adam Lambert Gay, You Awful Awful Homophobe", "Mrs. Bernstein is My Bffle" and the showstopping Act One Finale, "It's Hilarious How You All Think I'm TDH!"

This is gonna seem like I'm yelling at you... but I'm not.
But I must point-out your terribly poor choice of words: "Is there anything Off-Broadway worth seeing."
Honey, almost everything Off-Broadway is worth seeing (and in my humble opinion, oftentimes far-more worth seeing than Bway). Some of the best theatre in this town is off the blocks of the Rialto.
Remember, Off-Broadway simply denotes the number of seats in the theatre... not their specific location on a map.
That said, I recommend:
(the ones that don't really need your money, doing well on their own)
* Altar Boyz
Blue Man Group
* Fuerza Bruta
Rooms
Stomp
Becky Shaw
The Cripple of Inishmaan
Distracted
Happiness
The Marvelous Wonderettes
(the ones that could use the money and are phenomenal)
* Garden of Earthly Delights
* Kasper Hauser
* The Fantasticks
Ruined
Uncle Vanya
Our Town
Sleepwalk With Me
* This Beautiful City
* = my personal favorites
NOTE: If you're looking for a true theatre EXPERIENCE, then Fuerza Bruta is your way to go. If you're looking for an off-bway show that has production potential to be something you'd see on bway, then try the bigger theatre companies like MTC or Roundabout.
NOTE: Actor7, I'm so glad you loved Kasper Hauser (and the BATS) as much as I do. The Flea is an Off-Broadway house (upstairs) and an Off-Off-Broadway house (downstairs), simply because of the number of chairs (not the fact it's in Tribeca)

I couldn't agree more EugLoven. I would go even further and say OFTEN the ONLY theatre worth seeing in this city is being done Off-Broadway. You actually get to see real theatre actors doing what they do best. Off-Broadway may not have all the Celebutards but it certainly has the best actors. That is unless you need every show you see to have a song and dance number, like many of the people on this board. If that's the case stick to Bway.
I'd recommend (in no particular order):
BECKY SHAW
GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS
RUINED
HUMOR ABUSE
or you could see REASONS TO BE PRETTY and see a show that was Off-Broadway and that got moved uptown.
Have fun!!

Kaspar Hauser is only scheduled to be running until March 13, so odds of it being around at the end of May when the O.P. is planning on being in town are not high.
Though for anyone in the city before March 13 it is worth a look. My roommate said they have been getting really good responses from the audiences.

Becky Shaw and Inishmaan will be closed by then (I believe they're both closing on the March 15).
RUINED will probably be closed by then, unless it's extended.
OUR TOWN is the way to go.
