What shape is the London Les Miz in?

I'm coming to London in June for a week and am thinking of including Les Miz in the 7 shows/plays that I'll be seeing. Has anybody gone lately? Is it in good shape or is everybody phoning in their performances?
"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"

I went last week and it was the best cast I've ever seen of this show. I did feel the Javert was weak and Barry James seemed to be phoning it in, but overall everyone was increadible.

The ushers were quite nice as well re: What shape is the London Les Miz in?

Jeff is 1st Cover Javert (ie Understudy) -
Jeff's NOT the actor who usually plays Javert.

The comment about Javert may have been about the USUAL Javert.

(Anyone know any dates when Jeff will be on again?
I'd love to see Jeff play Javert.
He has a terrific voice.)

The current Valjean is John Owen Jones and is terrific.

Also Hayden Tee as Marius gives a fresh performance. For once there is a Marius who has some depth to his vocals. There are a lot of solid performers in the other roles. However there is a problem with the current Javert not having the voice to match his acting skills.

I just saw this show a couple weeks ago on a trip to London, and was completly blown away. After all these years, it was like seeing opening night. The cast is amazing, and the theatre is small (compared to US theatres) which is GREAT because every seat is a good seat! Definitly go if you get a chance!

John Owen-Jones will not be in Les Mis in June. He's doing Showboat at Royal Albert Hall.

I went last week to see Les Mis in London and after seeing the production a few years ago in the Palace Theatre, this was truly disappointing,Anyone I've spoken to, absoloutely loathed the production recently & they've been fans of the show for years. I heard The understudy for Javert is unbelievable though and he was able to salvage something from the show

Agreed, J&H. For me, the intimacy - while different - lessened the epic sweep of the show. And the orchestra! Oy! It sounded like a bad eight-track tape in my father's old Buick. It was all such a letdown, though I liked the guy playing Valjean.

Marius - Hayden Tee

re: What shape is the London Les Miz in?

Since when has Jeff Nicholson been first cover VALJEAN? It was Tim Godwin.

Jeff Nicholson was first cover JAVERT.

I'd love to see Jeff play either of those roles!

Have I missed something?

I rather feel I have made the posting equivalent of slipping on a banana skin!

"Old Biddy" is on the money!! I stand corrected!!

Tim godwin is 1st cover Valjean and Jeff Nicholson is 1st cover Javert.

re: What shape is the London Les Miz in?

I saw it twice last week and i LOVED it...and ive seen the tour twice in the US and still perferred the London version. The actors changed a lot through between the two performances...
the first night i had the under study for Javert (sorry, don't remember his name) and like someone else said, he was WONDERFUL. The next time Cornell John played his usual role and I didn't care for his portrayl....Kerry Ellis was great as Fantine and John Owen Jones was Jean Valjean and he was AMAZING.Best i've ever seen.
The first show an understudy played Marius..and i'm not sure his name(if anyone knows please let me know) and he was good but not amazing. His acting was really really good, his singing just wasn't as strong as some. Hayden played the role the next night and was very strong. I also had an understudy for Eponine one of the nights...and if I am correct (i got a bit confused on which night the regular actress was playing the role) the understudy was much better than the normal actress playing the role.

Overall I'd recommend it, it reminded me why I originally loved the play.

Oh, and Shaun Escoffery as Enjolras (leader of the school kids) was very strong and just overall great in this role.
