"You have two kinds of shows on Broadway – revivals and the same kind of musicals over and over again, all spectacles. You get your tickets for The Lion King a year in advance, and essentially a family... pass on to their children the idea that that's what the theater is – a spectacular musical you see once a year, a stage version of a movie. It has nothing to do with theater at all. It has to do with seeing what is familiar.... I don't think the theatre will die per se, but it's never going to be what it was.... It's a tourist attraction." Stephen Sondheim

It's not necessarily a happy song, but "Everything's Coming Up Roses" always gets me excited. I especially love the Peters version, with the added dialogue before the actual song. Hearing the lines "Look at the new star, Herbie." etc right into the BUMM and tremelo of the orchestra, and the opening "I had a dream" is such a thrill.

(Way back when) when I was in school I used to listen to "I have confidence in me" from The Sound of Music (the movie soundtrack, with Julie Andrews) on the morning of an exam. That song definitely makes you feel good and gives you confidence.

I have confidence in sunshine,
I have confidence in rain,
I have confidence that spring will come again,
Besides which, you see, I have confidence in me!
Coach Bob knew it all along: you've got to get obsessed and stay obsessed. You have to keep passing the open windows. (John Irving, The Hotel New Hampshire)

Norbert Leo Butz quotes about John Lithgow: "He's really clumsy. One of the joys in life is to watch a great big huge man totally wipe out backstage. It takes John about three minutes to hit the floor. It's like watching a Great Sequoia falling gracelessly."
