"Fun Home" is doing "Ring of Keys." For sure.
I really think they'll do Maple Ave and then end with Ring of Keys.
Does anyone think that Ring of Keys might get nixed due to content?

I hate medleys too. It sometimes makes it seem like you don't have one good song.
I haven't seen Something Rotten yet, but I really don't want them to do A Musical! The reviews talk about how that number is so spectacular so I don't want to see a shortened crap version that could spoil my experience in the theatre. And I know lots of people who decided not to see Aladdin because their Tony performance was terrible.

I doubt they'll do Ring of Keys-the censors won't allow it. (It's CBS, not PBS.) It won't sit well with people (and frankly, I think it's a questionable choice-there's too much room for misinterpretation). Upbeat group songs (Raincoat of Love would be just fine-they could set up the irony of the song, too; Welcome to Our House on Maple Avenue for the reasons I outlined above; Come to the Fun Home is a possibility, but the other two mentioned feature a good portion, if not ALL of the remarkable cast.) They only get about 5 minutes (if that-because we need to make sure that even the shows not nominated get to perform, the cast of Wicked gets to honor Steven Schwartz, among other things). I think the key with Fun Home itself is to feature as many people and use as upbeat a song as possible.
The other shows all have this in spades (except The Visit-Yellow Shoes is kind of it). This is their shot to sell the show. Upbeat trumps a ballad any day pretty much (there are a couple of exceptions, but I suspect they'll do something upbeat). If they do Ring of Keys, they likely will pair it with "Welcome to Our House". (I still think the opening into it would be stronger since it sets up the father/daughter dynamic and introduces the rest of the family.)
What in "Ring of Keys" is censorable? There's no explicit content of any sort.
"A Musical" will be completely fine edited down. The excision or inclusion of any individual joke from that song has no affect on the greater whole... which, frankly, is why it isn't the great show-stopper that it thinks it is.

It's not the CONTENT, it's the CONTEXT. And reading the threads one can see how it can be misconstrued very easily as a lustful song-which it isn't. I would be very uneasy if I was producing this show about putting that out there. (Even some critics didn't quite 'get' the context of the song-and if they don't...I am guessing some other folks watching won't either.) I also tend to think that it's a bad idea to give away the strongest songs/moments in a broadcast-if you do that, you're essentially taking away the motive for someone to BUY a ticket. Give them a teaser, a taste-make them WANT to fork out money to see it. (Plus, IMO, songs done on the broadcast are RARELY complete and RARELY as high of a quality as what is seen in the theater, as has been mentioned-due largely to time constraints with rehearsal, etc.) (I mean if they use Ring of Keys, that's their decision. But, if they use it, they should incorporate an upbeat song I think, for a medley. That would make sense.)

I really hope they do Veronique from On the 20th! I LOVE LOVE LOVE that number and Kristin is amazing in it. I know a lot of people think Babette, but I find Veronique to be the better number. I'm just dying to see it again!
Personally still rooting for Never from On The 20th... It has become the biggest literal show-stopped in the show and I think it gives viewers a better sense of what the show is about, out of context, than either Veronique or Babette. But then they are only playing for 5 more weeks after the Tony's and are pretty much selling out anyway, so they don't really need to "sell" the show with the performance, so they could just do Babette which is more of showy-glitzy production number...
I wonder if Kristin co-hosting has any influence on that, and also on the Opening Number of the Tonys... I thought "A Musical" would have made a great Opening, but the host(s) is/are usually in that number and I can't really picture how that would work
The Visit - "You, You, You"
Fun Home - "Ring Of Keys" (I hope they would do this).
Something Rotten - I think they will have to do a medley in order to showcase the nominated actors. "Will Power"/"A Musical".
The King and I - "Getting To Know You" would be fun but I feel like they will go with "Shall We Dance?"

Could The King and I do a medley that include "Something Wonderful" to showcase Ruthie Ann Miles? Maybe "Getting to Know You", "Something Wonderful" and then ending with "Shall We Dance?".
I would love for Fun Home to do "Ring of Keys" and "Come to the Fun Home".

Could fun home do part of Flying Away, and then pair it with something that features others? As much as I love Ring of Keys and Lucas, I would love to have footage of another song/medley featuring more of the cast.
For what it's worth, if they *really* want to include "Ring of Keys" on June 7? I think they should *start* with a verse, and have her hold out "oooh, your ring of keeeeys--" and then, open up the space, and reveal the family, and jump headlong into the opening bars of "Welcome to Our House...". They REALLY need to do a "full company" number to introduce the family. "Ring of Keyes", I feel, has been palyed out over the past year or so...
"Take it with a grain of salt, but Riedel said in a column that Something Rotten is doing Welcome to the Renaissance. If that's the case, I think it's a good choice as it's the catchiest number in the show. A Musical works in the theatre, but as Aladdin showed last year, a showstopper in the theatre doesn't work as well when you have to truncate it at the Tonys."
I was thinking about that article, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't it say that Something Rotten would be performing the opening number, phrased that way? Which we all took to mean Welcome to the Renaissance, but what if it means, they're performing the opening number of the Tony's? Again I could be remembering this wrong, or be wrong in my interpretation, but I hope I'm right, because while the ensemble in that show is absolutely incredible and they definitely deserve to be showcased, I'd love to see the nominees from the show showcased which they wouldn't be in that number.

Nope, here is the article
"Medley, not mashup, please."
Condescension aside, thank you for supplying the word that for some reason would not come to me.
After seeing American in Paris tonight, I wouldn't be surprised if they included Fidgety Feet in said medley.

If the Tonys were on ABC, I could see them pushing for The King and I to do "Western People Funny" to market Fresh off the Boat. J/K. They'll most likely do "Shall we Dance" with a good and generous intro.
I think OTTC should do "Sign Lily Sign" after the Porters do "Life is Like a Train". They will probably do something similar to the original production's Tony award performance but with more Cheno time.
I hope Something Rotten doesn't do "Will Power". I thought that song was incredibly boring on the Today show. Maybe it'll work better at the Tonys though.

IMO, "Will Power" did not come off nearly as effectively on the Today Show as it does on the stage. But, not a surprise, I think that can be said about almost any performance when it's done out of context on a news or entertainment show that limits them in the scope of the stage, time they have, or whatever.
I thought the OTTC segment was pretty good, despite how cramped the space was that they had to work with. Obviously, not as strong as what you see when you see the show itself. Those numbers in the show itself are simply spectacular.
While Ring of Keys is great, I think Fun Home has to do something that includes more cast members since so many of them are nominated individually along with the show's noms. It seems like the type of show that's prime for a medley.
It would be great for On the 20th Century to involve a tap dance break for the porters - they really are fun. Their talented dancing provides the viewing audience with a "wow" factor.

Maybe it was just my reaction (and my audience's) but the only disappointment I had with the King and I was that Shall We Dance was a little flat. It was the first time I have ever seen The King and I where it did not stop the show. The audience was clearly as disappointed as I was. I think they would be making a mistake to automatically to that number, something I never thought I would say. I did think that the show was otherwise great.
Would personally love to see numbers from Finding Neverland and Gigi. Think the right ones could come across better on TV than some of the other shows, possibly helping to continue Finding Neverland's momentum and give Gigi a little more time.
Would like a combination of I Hate Shakespeare and Will Power from Something Rotten...think they would be really funny together. A Musical is too long, and Welcome to the Renaissance is not as good as those two numbers IMO.
Would love to see a Come On a My Place / NY NY combination. Show the humor in the first, and the fact that NY NY is not the only famous song (Did I hear right, did you say three Hippodrome...).
I hate OTTC, although I thought Kristen Chenoweth was great (certainly the best musical performance of this or last season IMO), so any number that highlights her is fine with me.
Don't see them doing Yellow Shoes, since Chita is not in it, but it would probably come across best on TV, so that's a shame. Maybe a combination?
Re AAIP, I think they need a combo...have to show some of the ballet, but too much may not be good for business. Maybe 'Swonderful and part of AAIP number.
i don't mind combinations, as long as no more than 2... Double the time to whet the taste buds for more.
I havent seen Fun Home yet, so no opinion there.

AAIP – haven't watched
Fun Home – Medley (Welcome..., Ring of Keys probably.)
*Something Rotten! – I Hate Shakespeare + Will Power (This is what they did for Today, and it was passable, plus it showcases the leads. Hoping for "A Musical", but that one's really long and to cut it would probably be awkward. Or they could just do without some of the Chicago-esque dance numbers in the middle, and keep the rest. Come on, if there were EVER time to do this number and have people "get" it, it would be at the Tony Awards.)
*OTTC – Veronique (This is just my personal hope. It showcases Kristin & the company, although there's no Andy Karl... Maybe On The Twentieth Century, like they did in the first broadcast? And hopefully not Babette, since that's been everywhere. Veronique is definitely the superior number, and if they keep the first part with Gallagher and Mildred Plotka, it's a great way of introducing how Lily Garland came to be, telling audiences what the musical is partially about.)
*OTT – NY NY + Miss Turnstyles? Or maybe just the former.
*Gigi – The Night They Invented Champagne
*Finding Neverland – (You know HW will make sure they get a slot) Believe, probably :/ The most boring number on earth where Matthew Morrison sleepwalks around on stage and everything is staged a la community theatre (white cloth for "water", mermaid flopping around on someone's shoulders, red balloons...)
*The King and I – Getting to Know You + Shall We Dance (the first showcases kids and costumes, the second showcases the 2 nominees)
*The Visit – haven't watched, but something with Chita
New York, New York is not the most impressive number from On the Town.
I wish they could do Miss Turnstiles, but they need to feature Tony.
The only answer is some version of the dream ballet.
Damn, I sure wish that show was doing better.
I could see a special version of "A Musical" as the opening number, with bits from all the musicals, nominated or not, in small vignettes interspersed throughout it. That would also be a great way to keep those who weren't nominated much or at all included without taking up a ton of time and still letting the major nominees have a bigger individual presence.

That was my thought as I was watching Something Rotten
I get chills thinking of "The King And I" performing "Shall We Dance" once the burst in to the dance. One of those magical theatre moments.
