(I would think that this has been asked before, but I ran a search and found nothing. So...here's hoping.)
I will be in the city this week and as an annoying tourist I will likely be bringing my video camera with me. However, I don't have the option of dropping off my camera before going to a show.
If bags aren't checked and I just leave it in my purse, I assume it won't be a problem. But if they do check bags, will they hold it until after the show?
The shows we will be seeing are A Little Night Music, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Women on the Verge, and American Idiot if that makes a difference.
Thank you for any help you can offer me and my silly question.
Not a silly question at all. You have the option to check your bags but that's annoying. Honestly, just put it at the bottom of your purse and when they glance inside you'll be fine. If they do see it they might just tell you you can't use it. I wouldn't worry about it, though.
Enjoy the shows!
Film them! Just don't get caught.
Make a badge that says PBS and then go up on stage and start filming!
Emo, I have a new goal in life now.
Record Women On The Verge
just kidding! You should be fine though as long as you are not carrying it visibly inside the theatre! Enjoy the shows!
I saw Women on the Verge and Life in the Theatre this past weekend, carrying a large messenger bag and neither theatre asked me to open it for inspection...and yet, at the Regal cinema they did .. go figure.

When I went to Phantom of the Opera over the summer(also a tourist), we had our digital camera in plain view for the whole waiting time and performance and it was not even a problem. One of us just had it sitting their lap the whole time. I guess as long as it's not on during the show it's not a problem, at least there..
Theaters know they get a lot of their patronage from tourists so they're used to seeing video cameras in bags. As long as you don't have it out when you're in your seat, it shouldn't be a problem. :)

Nope. It depends solely on whether or not the producers of a show want to pay for security to rifle through bags.

Maybe Regal Cinema was checking for bed bugs!!!!
Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy your trip to NYC

Am guessing there's more demand for bootleg videos of Harry Potter than for flop-ish Broadway shows.
