What to see for Dad and two teen girls?

Hi all. My girls (17 and 15) and I will be in the first week of August (Tue-Thu) and looking to see four great shows. I've read the other posts but wanted to ask something best for them. We have Great Comet tickets on a Tuesday, will be trying hard for DEH tickets somehow for a Wednesday show (get your credit card out Dad) and have room for two more. On our short list so far is Come From Away (rush?), Groundhog, and Bandstand. Any others I will be missing? Saigon? I also have a TDF membership as I may need to preserve funds for the DEH ticket options (cancellation line, stubhub?). We would also be open to a play or an off broadway show. Thanks in advance.

I would also consider Anastasia. It's a wonderful production and the teenaged girls seem to really love it - the theatre was full of young adults when I saw it.
GDH is also a great choice as is Come From Away.

Groundhog Day and Come From Away or Bandstand. You'll definitely be able to get GHD on TDF/TKTS.
If they've seen and enjoyed the movie, Anastasia is an option.
For a play to break up the musicals, The Play That Goes Wrong is funny and enjoyable.
Also, in case you haven't seen the other threads, keep checking the Telecharge site a couple times daily for DEH tickets as they do release new tickets, usually about 3 - 5 days ahead of time.

I would also recommend Waitress. It's fun poppy music and a really good story for young girls, with plenty of humor for everyone.

If you can find tickets for HELLO DOLLY! pounce!

For musicals that are readily available on TDF, I think Bandstand and Miss Saigon are both excellent choices that definitely play well to teenagers. However, if you want to see Eva Noblezada in Miss Saigon, don't go on Wednesday evening, as that is when her alternate performs.

Another vote for Anastasia - it's definitely a show girls/young women would enjoy, and it's a truly beautiful production. Bandstand would also be a great choice! Groundhog Day is great and very funny, but it's a more specific sense of humor that might not play to everyone reliably.

Thanks for the recommendations on Anastasia - my 15 yo had mentioned that one. I hadn't considered Hello Dolly as none of us seem enthusiastic about it, but maybe I should look again. We've bypassed Waitress last trip and I think the other shows are pushing past that one again.

Honestly I would highly recommend Waitress since you haven't seen it yet. It's a really sweet show and story, great score by Sara Bareilles, and wonderfully centered around interesting and complicated women.

I don't think Hello Dolly will appeal to your kids.

I would highly recommend "War Paint" it has 2 great stars, strong female characters and shows what they achieved at a time women were not taken seriously as a force in the business world. Great sets, costumes, acting and singing.

I would also concur that Anastasia would probably be a popular choice. In fact during curtain calls when Derek Klena bowed all the teenage girls around me screamed like he was a teenager idol.

Highly recommend The Play that Goes Wrong--my husband is tough to please and he loved it--my whole family laughed nonstop.

(This is coming from an actual teenage girl who goes to see shows with her dad a lot, btw.)
I would also echo The Play That Goes Wrong if they're cool with not seeing a musical – my dad and I both loved it, and it's just really hilarious.
I just saw Anastasia this past Wednesday and it was cute, definitely the most teenagers I've ever seen at a Broadway show. I thought the writing was kind of awful though (some of the spoken scenes are actually hilariously bad), but it was enjoyable enough and I'm not mad I saw it. My dad seemed close to nodding off though – but he just went with me because he's a big fan of Ramin Karimloo.
Otherwise, I'd definitely say Waitress (it's surprisingly good!) and Bandstand (not the best show, but a lot of fun w/great music and dancing).
Have fun at Great Comet by the way! It's by far my favorite show this season and I hear the new cast members are amazing.
Hope this helped.

There are three phenomenal shows on Broadway right now ... Hamilton, DEH and Hello Dolly. Definitely try to see Hello Dolly if at all possible.
The comments from the teenager above should be considered. Take into account how mature your girls are .... my two teenage girls would not be a good fit for Anastasia.

To say Hello Dolly won't appeal to teenagers is a bit ridiculous. It might not have been something you liked, which is fine, but it's a classic. My two teenagers can't wait to see it next month....theyve planned our entire trip around it.
And yes, if you can get the DEH tix, that for sure. I think tey will both love Comet as well. My teens did, and are going back to see it.
My 15 year old LOVED Come From Away, liked GHD and had no interest in Bandstand. (Well, neither do I)
I would think Waitress could be another very viable choice for you, its a lot about female empowerment.

If you're looking for something to do during the day on Thursday, check out the New York Music Festival. Also, if you're considering Waitress, make sure Christopher Fitzgerald is going to be in it. I think he's due for a vacation.

Don't let Christopher being gone stop you from seeing it. The show stands on its own. He's great in it, but he doesn't "make" or "carry" the show.

Jeremy morse (the understudy for Chris in waitress) is fantastic in the show! You would not be missing a thing if you see him in the show! I also recommend waitress as a show to see. It is such a good musical, and I think everyone would enjoy it! As others have pointed out as well I also recommend aeeing Groundhog Day. It's such a fun and comedic show. As for Anastasia you might be able to get TKTS tickets for them. The show has been up almost everyday for the past week or two. I've never seen at 50% off but have seen it at 40% a couple times. Definitely worth a try at the booth if you want to see that show!

I'm a 16 year old girl and Waitress is the ideal show for teenage girls. It has poppy music, romance, comedy, and pie! Lol, but yes Waitress and Anastasia. I would also recommend Bandstand. I love the rather sweeping score and story. I don't know about War Paint. Yes, it's good but for me, it gets pretty boring. One of the guys in my community theatre saw it and said the title is ironic because the show is literally "like watching paint dry." I don't know, I just wouldn't recommend it for a teenage girl like me. It's still great though but there's better options.

School of Rock. Will appeal to everyone.

I think "School Of Rock" would be great for all of you, my family loved it. I think "Bandstand" with it's swing music and excellent dancing would be a good choice also. I will not be seeing GHD, Anastasia and Hello Dolly until Labor Day weekend so I can't give you first hand opinion of them before you come to NYC. Have fun !!
