1. The Wedding Singer (so much energy from EVERYONE in the cast, and it has an amazing cast and great songs and it's a great story)
2. Tarzan (the first 5 min just worth the money but the entire show is great! A lot of swinging going on and very entertaining)
3. Wicked (I have yet to see it but the cast album is GREAT and I have heard nothing but good reviews and I have heard the "Defying Gravity" is the best song to watch)
4. Sweeney Todd (i dont know what to say about it but it's a great show)
5. The Lion King (this was the first broadway show i saw and it was great. Not the best but top 5 worthy for shows i've seen and heard about. It's a familiar story and if nothing else the kids will blow you away with their voices)
I really hope you enjoy your visit whatever you see just be sure to tell us all about it!

Sweeney Todd
The Lieutenant of Inishmore
The History Boys
Faith Healer
The Wedding Singer
Avenue Q
Sweeny Todd
DRS
Drosey Chaprone
Chicago
These are, of course, only out of the ones that I've seen. I won't try to give opinions of shows about which I have no knowledge.
-Monty Python's Spamalot (It's so great...it's humorous, colorful, and entertaining, but if you don't like Monty Python, don't see it.)
-RENT
-The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
-Altar Boyz (which is Off-Broadway...but I found it HILARIOUS)
-The Lion King (so so so visually appealing)

Phantom of the opera
1. Chicago (Brilliant. Absolutely the best show ever written. You have it on the West End, so maybe you'd rather not see it.)
2. Sweeney Todd (Absolute genius. Sondheim's score is excellent, yes, but Doyle's direction is incredible. The cast is fantastic as well.)
3. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Most of the great original cast has left, but it's still a damned good show!)
4. The Drowsy Chaperone (Very funny, tunefull little show with a heartwarming side as well.)
5. Avenue Q (It's playing in London now. However, it might be interesting to compare it to the West End version if you've seen it across the pond already. It's also a funny show.)
Don't see Wicked though. Don't waste your money on it now. It's a good show, yeah, but try to grab tickets for it when it opens in London. The replacement cast isn't especially good. In my opinion, no one will match the original cast's brilliance.

I'm really into comedy, and so if you're looking for some wholesome American comedy, then by all means, see these shows. :) Enjoy your trip!
The History Boys
Drowsy Chaperone
The Color Purple
Sweeney Todd
25th Annual Putnam County Speling Bee
Wicked is also good. But I would also suggest "Altar Boyz" off Broadway. A very fun show.
1-The Wedding Singer
2-Rent
3-Tarzan
4-Chicago(but if you have it in London, why see it on Bway?)
5-I love you, you're perfect, now change(Off Bway)
Well my top 5
1. Rent - This was my first show I ever saw when I was just a little kid back in 1996, and I adore it. I think everyone should see a "rock opera."
2. The Wedding Singer - I was surprised with how much I loved this but between the funny jokes and the great music it's a sure bet that you will walk out loving it. Just make sure you watch Flashdance before you go so you get some of the jokes...
3. Wicked - Incredible show, I loved it all 3 times I went to see it in the nosebleeds, and usually I get so tired with a show after a couple times. This one I could see again and again. Love the storyline and you can't lose with Eden, she is very talented.
4. Jersey Boys - Again great musical, little slow for the first 20 minutes then it really picks up. I have named this one Goodfellas set to music instead of Jukebox Musical.
5. Putname Spelling Bee - I had a smile on my face from start to finish, it's so cute and really touching. Those people really make you believe they are 10 year olds. Its just great.
AND if you have the chance, catch Sherie in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. I am all dirty rotten'd out since seeing 3 times in 6 months, but sherie scott, arnez, and sara g are amazing in it.

Avenue Q. Please see Q here. Really funny stuff, it's changed form the London production if you saw that.
Spelling Bee- Hilarious, Please, tell us how Barrett Foa (the new Leaf Coneybear) was.
The Color Purple. Give it a chance.
Drowsy Chaperone- So cutre, it really grows on you after a while.
Rent and Wicked if you want to see what all the fuss is about.
Spamalot- Good luck getting tickets, a must for Python fans.
Phantom, Mama Mia are good tourist stops, as is Jersey Boys.
And possibly a Disney musical, if you are into that kind of stuff.
Oops, more than five.
Oh well. Have fun, whatever you choose.
1. SWEENEY TODD
2. THE HISTORY BOYS
3. JERSEY BOYS
4. FAITH HEALER
5. RENT
In random order, my top 5 are:
Jekyll & Hyde
Sound of Music
Phantom
Wicked
Beauty & the Beast
Honorable mention to:
42nd Street
ON Broadway, honey. ON Broadway.
Avenue Q - See it here. The show is a lot of fun, and the current cast is amazing.
RENT - If you have not seen this anywhere, you must see it. The story, the characters, and the music make the show so real and exciting. For Broadway, it is a must-see
Wicked - Wicked is also awesome, but opening in London...
Spelling Bee - Haven't seen it, but hear its a lot of fun. Barret Foa is in it, and he is amazing.
Jersey Boys - Probably to hard to get tickets so...
But your best chances are with the fist two
Sweeney Todd
Lt. of Inishmore
Avenue Q
Rent
Faith Healer
PHANTOM
DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS
SPAMALOT
WICKED
SWEENEY TODD
I'd say RENT and CHICAGO, but the current casts seem to have much to be desired.
THE WEDDING SINGER is growing on me

Based on your avatar I would think Sweeney is your best bet (although you most likely saw it in your home country already). However, I would HIGHLY recommend Company once it opens.

The best musicals on broadway right now are:
1)The Color Purple- it's a truly amazing, heart wrenching, inspirational show that is still very fun and hilarious. It's great to see such a serious novel and movies turned into such a fun, uplifting musical. Especially since the original cast is still there it's a definite must see while your in NY. La Chanze is brilliant.
2) Wicked- my personal favorite show and I don't know why. It's just great and it makes you feel good and have fun. However, since your from London I would just wait to see it there with Idina Menzel because she is so much better than the girl playing Elphaba now.
3) Avenue Q- this is a fantastic, hilarious, cutting edge show that has no flaws, except the lack of dancing. But if it's in London now you might as well see it there.
4) Sweeney Todd- is an experience like no other but unless your a real "theatre lover" than I wouldn't go. It's not a show for tourists and maintream masses. But Lupone and Cerveris make it all worth it.
5)Hairspray and DRS are tied at fifth because they are both just great. And they are both similar in their style of comedy and songs. If I had to go see one a second time I would choose hair spray because it has better songs and dancing, but DRS has better comedy and acting.
I hope this helps you with your decision, just make sure you see THE COLOR PURPLE you won't leave dissatisfied.
