Very recently, it seems. I bought a ticket to Sondheim on Sondheim last week and it was still $36.50. Their prices have been steadily on the rise for the last five years.

Plays are up to $34.50 now, too.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Also, I noticed they're now instructing you to print out confirmations and bring them to the box office with photo ID. When did that start?

When Broadway started hiring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Kelsey Grammer, Denzel Washington, et al

Don't blame Denzel. He's working for the minimum on this production.

I usually always bring my printed confirmation paper with me--started doing it after an incident where the theatre lost my reservation and I had to go into the theatre's box office, use their computer and show them my account--and am almost never asked to proffer it. The only exception is MTC, which always asks for either a confirmation paper or ID.

I always bring the confirmation as well and the only thing I'm quizzed on in my first name.

Minimum Hollywood maybe, but Denzel is not working for Equity minimum.

"He's said in interviews he is for this play."

Then he's a moron.

1. He's a bankable star
2. He has played Broadway before
3. Fences is a highly recognizable play
4. Fences is dirt cheap to run, one set, small cast
5. The producers are charging regular Broadway prices for this run
6. Tony Award
7. Tony Award
8. Tony Award

Denzel: $20 million a movie, genuinely loves the theatre. He doesn't do plays for the money.

That's why rich people start foundations.

No photo id. You have to prove you are eligible.
