When I sucked in high school drama. Then I realized I prefer a steady job, and not be homeless. So I went into law and perform in a courtroom instead.

"If you work as hard as you can, and do everything you can, you will get at least one shot at this business." - Emily Padgett
That quote is misleading... If you REALLY SUCK, it's doubtful you'll get a professional shot in the "business." That's why there is always community theatre.

^ Yowzers. Last night I attended a "community theatre" and there is a lot of talent there.
Oh, and it's alums include Audra McDonald, Heidi Blickenstaff, and several others who have gone on to perform on television, in films, and on Broadway. So don't count out community theatre.

When I realized that there would only be so many productions of Miss Saigon, The King and I, and Flower Drum Song and that I couldn't compete with Lea Salonga.

About seven years ago when I realized I couldn't sing or dance, and then five years ago when I realized I was wasting my high school time in color guard instead of choir or theatre class.

I realized pretty early I'm not a great singer, not a great dancer, and plain looking at best. So.... as much as I dreamed about it in high school and college I ended up with a poli sci degree.

I have tremendous respect for community theatre... You clearly missed the point of my post. Community Theatre is not professional theatre, which is what one would consider the "business" seeing as you are then being paid to perform. That is not the case in community theatre. What is there to not understand? Am I missing something?

I think the poster thought you meant that community theater is filled with the people you said "REALLY SUCK".

That is because if you do REALLY SUCK, it's unlikely you'll be professionally hired as a performer... So what's the alternative? Community theatre. I am not, however, suggesting that community theatre itself SUCKS. Let's be clear.

I never saw myself on a Broadway stage
Maybe I knew my two left feet would rule it out
i have sung professionally about 100 times with my former bAnd
i have friends in both kinky boots and wicked so have gotten to walk bway stages after a show
and the feeling of looking out from the stage and imagining it was very memorable

Ditto! I'm just an avid theatre audience member. I actually 100% prefer it that way, too. No pressure when watching shows to be "the next so-and-so".

OK maybe i should not find this post to be funny but I do. I have been on Broadway many times and I also think each show will be my last. I remember being in my first Broadway Show (Hairspray) and thinking they would soon realize they hired the wrong guy and send me packing. That never happened thank goodness. I will say this: I am glad I never gave up even though I told myself many times over that I would never get to Broadway. In fact I had convinced myself that I never even wanted to try and be on Broadway. Dammit, I really messed that up because I have been working on Broadway since 2004. Shows ya how much I know, thank goodness I am not a psychic or else I would be in major trouble. I am rambling now, but I do believe that If I can make it here then you can too....

Never expected to as a performer. But this year, I'm 25 and I'm working harder than ever to ready my shows for NYMF, because the common wisdom is if you're not good at something and successful in the arts by 25, you're not going to be ever.
I have an amazing non-arts day job, and I'm active in community and professional theatre at night. But sometimes that feels like I'm kidding myself, that I'm a medical expert pretending to be an artist. So we shall see how the year goes!
