Which (Other) Show Should My Theatre Production See?

As some of you already know, I'm going to New York with my school to see the Phantom of the Opera. We are also going to see Light in the Piazza and Wicked. Our theatre teacher wants to see one extra show. Which show would you recommend for a group of High Schoolers? We saw DRS and the Lion King the last time around, and our teacher couldn't get tickets to Spamalot. Based on that information, which show do you recommend?

I would also say Sweeney. It is an amazing production, and I'm sure you guys will have a lot to discuss after seeing the show.

If you want something more light hearted and fun, I'm sure you will have a good time at Spelling Bee as well.

I without hestitation tell you to get tickets to THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE.

It's phenomenal and its hysterical. One of the best shows on Broadway right now.

^ Not at all. I'm thirteen, and I absolutley love it.

does it have a lot of "inappropriate" stuff like language or sexual stuff in it, i wanna see it really bad, and i am one of the "younglings" on this board!!!!

I agree that Sweeney maybe be a stretch. Some people can handle a barber who kills people and a woman who makes pies out of dead people, but not all high schoolers can.

I would go with Spelling Bee, the humor is accessible to all, and it is not very offensive. It is a treat and hey maybe one of you guys could end up on stage.

I asked about Sweeny, and my theatre teacher said that he would consider it. I'm so excited. I saw the first act of Sweeny with the OBC (on videotape, of course), and can't wait to see the second, if we do go at all. Will Patti LuPone disappoint?

I didn't have time to talk to him about Spelling Bee, however.

Well is your group full of Rentheads and Wicked freaks? Because I can NEVER see the Rentheads in my high school sitting through SWEENEY.

If they want something more upbeat and happy, HAIRSPRAY, or SWEET CHARITY.

I have to entirely disagree with Sweeney being too dark for highschoolers. It's not like they are 10 or 11. They would be between 14 and 18 years old. You read Shakespear and Joyce in high school. I think Sweeney may not be the most fun, but anyone that age serious about theatre should have the capacity to take and understand it. (I'm not saying that some won't, but as a general rule they should be old enough.)

There is not much "inappropriate" language in Sweeney, if you have heard the score you have heard it. There are a couple moments of dark sexuality regarding the judge.
I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

I never said it was inappropriate for high school students.

But I know kids who thought CHICAGO was terribly boring and stupid because it had no set, so I wouldn't want to know what some would think of SWEENEY.

I wasn't talking to you ljay, your post wasn't up when I wrote mine.

I agree, if anything they might find it boring. But most of these posts were about the subject matter, I think the subject matter is fine for most High Schoolers.

There are several Rentheads in the school. But our teacher is already considering taking us to see the Rent movie, so I doubt that we'll see that. As for them not being able to sit through it. I don't know. On the one hand, they're awfully mature, joking about Avenue Q 24/7. On the other hand, they were bored of "A Streetcar Named Desire". I'm personally vouching for Sweeny, as I really want to see Patti live.
