...or Doris Eaton.
And she could do it, too:)
1. Ruthie Henshall
2. Paige Davis (Iknow she will be in chicago)
3. Rachel York
OK...I have to go with show and say Kelli O'Hara.
Back in late 98 - early 99, I saw Downtown Cabaret Theatre's Kopit/Yeston PHANTOM featuring a friend and Kelli O'Hara as Christine. The depth in her acting and the control in her astonishing voice makes me long to see her as Galinda (provided she's got comic timing...I've never seen her in a comedy).
I know Kelli pretty well, and she's great. But I don't think she can really belt it well. Gorgeous chops though.
I wish it could be someone young and not 40 like Alice or Sherie or Ruthie.
I doubt Cody could sing it either - at least well.
hmmm, interesting
How about Vanessa Redgrave? Wait, who?
Jane Krakowski could sing it.
how about the PINK PANTHER as a role switch-eroo?

ruthie henshall is too old, doesnt have a legit soprano, and doesnt have the range for the role. if anything shed be a better elphie, but shes too old for that too.
how about rosie o'donnell- i cant understand why no one has mentioned her already! LOL
hehe

Again, you're all mentioning people that are ancient! Can we do the age cut off at at LEAST 35? Can we cap it there, since clearly, no one wants to see someone 25, actually play someone in their 20's.
I think that Jessica Simpson is a very interesting possibility, provided she works on her soprano and prepares for the role. It would definitely boost ticket sales up, and Wicked would be sold out for a year, if not more.
The best Broadway candidate mentioned, so far, is Amy Spanger. She's perfect for the role, I think.

amen to an age cut off...35 works for me..
AMY SPANGER - work it girl
Jane Krakowski had one of the smallest vocal ranges I've ever heard, so she definitly could not do it. Jessica Simpson, as far as I can tell, has no legit soprano to speak of. She can do the hoot-y pop high notes, but they have no weight to them. And, while I love The Newlyweds, I really don't think Jessica has the brain-power to work on the stage night after night dealing with the different situations that could be thrown at her. And frankly, she's awkward looking when she sings. She contorts her face and enunciates oddly. Wow, I guess the same type of thing can be said about Idina, but somehow I love it on her! Just my opinion.
Doris Roberts
Why not Wing? What I wouldn't give *her* sing Popular!
"And frankly, she's awkward looking when she sings. She contorts her face and enunciates oddly"
OMG, yeah! Did you see her sing on VH1 Diva's Live the other night? It was almost commical.
How about Ann Harada. I'm all for a more ethnic take on Galinda...and Ann has a kick-ass voice, and is funny.

Liked the Amy, Kate and Kerry ideas but I think I want to see Laura Bell Bundy

Whats with the age issue? Ever since Broadway began, people who read younger under the lights and from a distance have been playing MUCH younger, due to their life experience making it so much easier to convey the emotional ranges of their characters....so lets not rule out people based upon their ages.
I don't think Amy Spanger is a great choice...I haven't heard much of a soprano range from her. I saw her in Urinetown and she belted the entire score.
I wish Madeline Kahn were still around. I know she would have been too old, but man could she have kicked Kristin' ass.
oh Amy can sing it, I guarantee it. Her mix/headvoice is gorgeous, and IT ALL SOUNDS LIKE ONE!! i sweat it :)
"Kerri Butler should leave Little Shop and take over the role of Glinda. She's a perfect match in a much better suited role"
Yeah, I agree!
what about j. grove? anyone who has seen her perform miss dorothy knows she has the range for it.

I can see Maggie Benjamin doing a great job with it. She can really transform into a character, and she's very animated, and very pretty. I'm not sure her voice would fit the role, but I can definitely see her personality and acting style fit. Her comedic timing is amazing.
