Smaxie, the reasons you gave are exactly why I love the South Pacific recording. Go figure, haha. :)

Posted: 1/1/09 at 1:24pmI agree with you on the content of the new South Pacific recording (although where is the "Honey Bun" reprise?) But for me, there's something very placid about that disc. I don't get a lot of the joy of the material out of it, as I did when I saw the production in the theatre. The recording is very measured, cautious, controlled. It sent me right back to both the OBCR and the State Theatre recording with Florence Henderson. Something about the way it was recorded also makes the orchestra sound strangely small - not the way I felt when I heard them in the theatre.

GYPSY is a stellar cast recording and should win. That said, I think IN THE HEIGHTS will.
What was the 2003 GYPSY up against? That recording really isn't that good, and I'm surprised it won.

I hope In The Heights wins!
I think that the Gypsy CD was annoying at times-Patti LuPone is great, just very very loud.
Young Frankenstein was very good, but I think that since it is always going to be compared to Brooks' previous work, it does not even begin to compare.
I dis-like South Pacific in general--I am not myself a huge fan of either the production or the music itself
Little Mermaid was cute, gave me the feel that I was underwater at points-but I only listen to the Ursula songs and the rest get borring since I've heard them all through-out my childhood.

I am rooting for South Pacific or In the Heights.
I think In the Heights will win though.

Brick:
The year Bernadette's GYPSY recording won, it was up against MOVIN' OUT, and the revivals of FLOWER DRUM SONG, MAN OF LA MANCHA, and NINE.

The Gypsy recording is the definitive, complete recording of an American classic, and though I personally love both, I think In the Heights will beat it out in the end (although Gypsy certainly deserves it)
The Little Mermaid album is also superb...maybe an upset?

KATHY GRIFFIN IS GOING WIN IN HER CATEGORY. SHE IS THE ONLY GOOD PERSON IN IT.
You mean she's the only good person in her category that includes
Lewis Black, George Carlin, Flight of the Conchords, and Harry Shearer? Seriously?

In the Heights? Really?
I think it's between South Pacific and Gypsy. Aside from being brand names, they're really well produced albums. I would like Gypsy to win, but South Pacific is also a very beautiful album.

If it's between anyone it's between IN THE HEIGHTS & SOUTH PACIFIC both which are gorgeously produced. I don't think GYPSY stands much of a chance. The show works better on stage and many people I know found it to not work on disc (Patti screaming at the end of ROSE'S TURN on the disc does not have the same impact it does onstage and in context). SOUTH PACIFIC's score has never sounded better but IN THE HEIGHTS really beautifully captured level-ground between sounding too-"pop" or hip-hop and is really beautifully produced somewhere between showtune and pop; a much harder task than capturing a classic score on CD.
If anyone beats IN THE HEIGHTS, it will be SOUTH PACIFIC but don't hold your breath. The Grammys like new musical recordings.

I agree, WiCkEDrOcKS. In the Heights will win most likely because it's a fresh, new show and also pop/hip-hop oriented. The Grammys love that. If anyone's going to spoil, it's going to be South Pacific, not Gypsy, especially since the Bernadette recording won six years ago. Yet another Gypsy winning so soon? Probably not.

That's very much true, but it's also true in regards to the new GYPSY recording. Like Patti's vocals or not, the album is gorgeous and brilliantly executed.
And I'm with Smaxie on the SOUTH PACIFIC recording. While lovely, it lacks the exuberance and spirit that it could have had. The GYPSY recording, on the other hand, has them in droves.
Patti's anguished ending of Rose's Turn may be unfortunate to some for the disc, but how can you let that invalidate the other stunning, nuanced, and dynamite performances and tracks? That's pretty unfair, IMO.
