I love the movie too. After the recent Ten Commandments musical in L.A. (which, although bad, wasn't nearly AS bad as other things I've seen), I think it'll be a while before people can seperate the two versions of the story.
And when it comes right down to it, I'm kinda sick of "family-oriented" theatre. I want more originality, some romance, some edginess, some drama, and perhaps even something a bit dark.
I personally loved the film and find it some of Schwartz's best work, but I think it would be a hard sell on Broadway. That parting of the Red Sea, for example, was just stellar in the movie theater, and I can't think of a stage effect that would induce the same kind of gasp.
I would love to see this happen if only to see the score expanded. I think it is by FAR Schwartz's best work (it doesn't have that smug sensibility of his own cleverness in his lyrics, for once).
Plus I would love to see a good designer and director take on the staging. Its a great story to deal with theatically, rather than realistically.
Love the score, "Deliver Us", "Through Heaven's Eyes", "All I Ever Wanted" and let's not all forget "When You Believe" would be major show stoppers, but I would rather see it have a good run in a pre-Broadway stop before ever reaching Broadway. It still seems a bit strange for Broadway to me, but with the right director anything is possible these days.
IMHO, it would have to play in the West End first, where it might have a better shot. Producers here *would* be looking at "Ten Commandments" and thinking "No way am I doing a Moses thing".
And to alleviate the concerns of the previous poster, Dreamworks is the same bunch giving us the hip-hop Donkey in SHREK. You wanted edgy, I believe? :)
