Posted: 7/18/10 at 12:49pmI wish more than ANYTHING I could go to see the final performances of Alice, Jennifer and Brian. If anyone here is going, please please give reports! I wish the producers would allow the taping of the speeches. (Or, you know, all of it. It's a special thing.) I'm sure it will be really emotional and amazing.

Posted: 7/18/10 at 5:14pmMarin Mazzie is no film star- she is a Broadway woman! I loved Alice but I am curious to see her and her husband, another legit Broadway star, play the roles together.

I don't think that the tweet is accurate. The show started pretty close to on time. There was a huge round of applause after the announcement to turn off cell phones. We could barely hear the prologue.
When the light came up there was another huge round for applause for Alice, and she played with the crowd a bit, looked at Kyle and pointed out at the audience. Another huge round of applause for Brian and Jenn as they made their entrances. After that we settled in for an intense, visceral ride.
As you would expect, everyone was very committed and was in fine voice, much more so than other times. The audience responded with great enthusiasm to everything, but was particularly loud for "I Miss the Mountains", "I Am the One", "Superboy and the Invisible Girl" and "I'm Alive".
Alice and Louis seemed very playful during their numbers "My Pyscho Pharmocolgist and I" and the scene where she meets Dr Madden and thinks he's a rock star.
The second act had it's usual dramatic high point with the music box, but it was obviously more intense tonight. Alice was...as has been said before really amazing during "The Break" and to use the term that drives me crazy...on fire...no she was the towering inferno.
The most wonderful unexpected moment came during "Hey #3" between Adam and Jenn. The got very emotional and it was really touching and beautiful. The rest was beautiful as always. The reprise of "I Am the One" always tears me up and tonight was no different, and the finale is one of my favorite moments in theater, visually and acoustically. I love hearing Louis sing "the price of love is loss, but still we pay, we love anyway."
After the curtain call, Mr Kitt and Mr Yorkey came out and paid tribute to their very talented cast members, and said very nice things about them. Alice said some nice things about the audience and how she appreciated the people who were there, and pointed at people in the audience and said their names. the she said hopefully someday she'll be in the audience and they will be on stage.
I've been to some final performances of plays that were closing before, but this was my favorite. I'm thinking that I'll have to go to the TKTS booth tomorrow and see what Marin and Jason do with Diana and Dan.

I just got home.
I first off want to say that, contrary to what I had anticipated, the audience was VERY well-behaved. The three leads were greeted with enthusiastic entrance applause, and there was extended applause after their big numbers, but nothing inappropriate. No shouts of "Don't go, Alice!" thank goodness.
The show, to use a word Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey brought up during the speeches, was a very visceral experience tonight. Everyone was on top of their game. Ripley was as intense as she always is, delivering the kind of towering performance you don't see often. It's a performance that I'm almost certain won't be topped.
Highlights tonight included a gorgeous I Miss the Mountains, and Brian D'Arcy James soaring through I've Been. Maybe was particularly touching, this evening as well. As someone else mentioned, the last verse of Hey #3 was very emotional. Adam Chanler-Berat could not get the words out at first and looked overcome with emotion.
Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey both spoke at the curtain call, saying that it was because of Ripley's work in the early readings that Diana moved out of the background and became what would become the show's main character. They said that watching Brian D'Arcy James, they realized that this is the way Dan should be played. I couldn't figure out if that was a dig at Bobby Spencer or not. They said that to have as much talent as Jen Damiano does at her age is incredible. Then someone handed the microphone to Alice Ripley, who began by doing jazz hands and then thanking everyone in the audience, and even naming a few people by name. She said she hoped to one day be able to be in the audience when they were up on stage so that she could watch them. Tom Kitt thanked everyone again, and that was it.
A wonderful night at the theatre!

Posted: 7/18/10 at 11:20pmBy far, one of (if not THE) best theatre experience of my life. Alice Ripley is a legend. It was so emotional it almost made me sick. I was also surprised of how well behaved the audience was.

Oh lord I am mortified. Thanks Mil. LOL. And to think I was worried about spelling Mr Yorkey's name correctly, and not like my favorite breed of dog!

I was there tonight as well and want to echo everyone's thoughts. It was definitely a special night.
During the first half of the first act, I kept thinking, "this is the funniest comedy on broadway!" Alice definitely put a lot of winks to the audience in her performance, which was pretty incredible considering how she still flawlessly delivered the emotion and vocals to her character as well. She was absolutely hilarious with Louis Hobson.I have certainly never thought of next to normal as a "funny show", but it definitely was tonight.
Not to say that the dramatic impact wasn't there, believe me it was. I am always amazed how this show continues to have an effect on me, always when I least expect it. Tonight it happened during "Maybe".
But of course what killed everyone in the audience was Adam Chandler-Berat during "Hey 3". It was so unexpected, and so touching. A really nice moment indeed.
For the me surprise star was Brian D'arcy James though. He really grew into the role from when I saw him in May. Everything from I've been to A light in the dark was spot on.
The stagedoor was the predictable zoo everyone thought it would be.
The speeches were very touching, especially Tom Kitt recalling how much he loved Alice in Sideshow and how he then got to play piano for her later.
As for the stagedoor, it was really nice that everyone from the understudies to Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt signed. The crowd was definitely a bit of crazyness. My personal highlight was yelled at Brian D'arcy Jame: " I love your eyeybrows!" The crowd was massive, it went almost to mMmphis, and there were people standing and watching by Juniors. I would say at most places it was five to seven people deep.
A great night, and I for one will definitely be going back to Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley!
