Why are you surprised? Most people here didn't like the show, so it's not out of the ordinary that they didn't care for the Tony performance, either. I thought the show was OK but the performance felt disjointed and a bit over-the-top and I felt that way when I saw the show in New York as well. The emotions that were present in Boston were turned up way past 11 in New York and the show seemed more like a cliche than anything else....

I really liked Spring Awakening's performance, but I still feel a bit ucky about all the Ken Davenport business. Really bummed I missed it on Broadway. Shuffle Along offers a runner-up, that dancing is quite amazing.

At first, I thought Hamilton basically excluding all of their nominees was odd. Then I realized what they were doing. They are playing the long game- The leads are all on their way out, and I am guessing their marketing team realized that there is a risk of people thinking the show has less juice once the original cast is gone. By doing Yorktown they rebranded the sensation as "no no no- it is not the stars, it is the show that is the thing that is hot" By rebranding, they are hoping to keep the hysteria going for the show. I think that is the biggest win of using your four minutes. If they had done the Room Where It Happens, people would have been less likely to be excited about buying tickets a year from now knowing the "star" is no longer with the show.

Just watching. At the end. I very much enjoyed all of the performances. The only ones that were lacking a bit for me were School of Rock and Spring Awakening.

wasn't crazy about Seller's acceptance speech leading into another Hamilton performance. Yeah it was a bit of a tie in but would like to maybe have seen the casts from the other shows included in that. That would have been cool. JMO

I think that Bright Star was extremely impressive for the vocals but I said to my partner after I still have no idea what this show is about.  He said she has a story to tell and it is big (quoting the song).  I said like that helped.  I thought she sang it beautifully.

I would say "Shuffle Along" and "The Color Purple". I was disappointed in "She Loves Me", expected more from that show and wanted to love it.

That reminds me. Now that I've heard that song after seeing the show, I don't think the specific lyrics apply very well. Yes, she's got a story, that's fine. But the part about lying down in the river or whatever is an odd thing to mention.

Oh my, Cynthia and the "The Color Purple" hands down as the  "wow, I need to see that live" moment of the Tonys.

While I don't think the box office will be impacted negatively (the cynic in me says it might even boost it) the "On your feet" medley  was such a Vegas/cheesy production that it was embarrassing.

Jessie Mueller's performance. The raw emotion - unbelievable.  I will definitely see the show.

Loved the Waitress segue from Sara to Jessie, but wish they'd just gotten rid of Opening Up. Replacing it with Bad Idea would've been great (but I suppose ~sex~) or even The Negative! Jessie's performance is love it or hate it, so that's pretty effective.

Somewhat disappointed with She Loves Me, not sure what could've been done though. Maybe I Don't Know His Name/Tonight At Eight for their Tony nominees? But those numbers don't showcase SLM's feel and what to expect. Ilona/She Loves Me/Vanilla Ice Cream has the spectacle, color and high notes that people expect from classic musicals... especially effective, I think, for those who'd watched the 1993 staging.

For Hamilton, wished they'd just stuck with one angle for the ensemble shots. The choreography did not come off as well as a simple front shot would've. Also, the closing number was overkill (3 performances!) though it was nice to hear the women, finally.

Color Purple - Cynthia, Cynthia, Cynthia, yes!!! I thought they did a nice job balancing the cast in the first minute with Cynthia bringing it home with I'm Here. Weird camera angle though... I could see all the way into the back of her mouth, including her molar fillings. Too much detail.

I thought School of Rock was cute, and Shuffle Along was appropriately energetic. Spring Awakening was another show that could've benefitted from fewer camera angles. And Bright Star showcased Cusack's voice beautifully but sort of petered out halfway... would've loved a single Cusack solo.

The 'finale' really should have been cast members from all the shows.

I agree with you. I just saw Bright Star last night and was impressed! After watching their Tony's number again a few minutes ago, I got the same chills again... but for a newbie, I think the song "Whoa Mama" would have been a better 'advertisement' for the show. They performed it on the Today show a few weeks ago I just watched it a few minutes ago as well. It still showcases Carmen Cusack but also features the ensemble and Paul Alexander Nolan. Are you guys planning to see the show before it closes on Sunday?

Waitress and Color Purple.

I actually expected Sara Barailles to sing Opening Up with the cast (I imagined the cast huddled around her, shielding her from the view from the audience, and when the music for Opening Up starts they would "open up" to reveal her to loud applause) before switching directly to Jessie Mueller singing She Used to Be Mine. but I guess the way they did their medley works too.
