of course any medley would feel disjointed but they could have made it work.

Yes.  Really disappointed we didn't see Leslie.  Certainly he appeared in the opening, but it really wasn't part of the "Hamilton" performance.

Not to be confused with Dave19.

I agree about SLM.  The medley thing just didn't do it for me.  I'm not sure what else I would have done with it as you needed to showcase Levi, Benanti and Krakowski somehow, but it seemed as disjointed and frenetic as On the Twentieth Century did last year for me.  I know some on here were okay with it, but it just didn't land with me.

As for Fiddler, I agree….interesting choice.  But it did showcase the choreography very nicely which I thought was one of the highlights of the show.

Bright Star?  Yes!  Loved it.  Will it sell tickets?  Maybe not. But Cusack is a dream!

The Color Purple was absolutely phenomenal and used the 4 mins so well, and didn't make a medley seem awkward and all over the place at all.

Bright Star was also really nice, especially after just seeing it last night.

Fiddler was definitely a shocking song choice, but very well done.

I recently watched a complete recording of the 1970 Tony Awards, which included a pre-recorded clip of Katharine Hepburn in Coco that ran for 15 minutes with no commercial interruption.

The Color Purple probably helped itself the most. It's the one performance that made me wish I had seen the show. I understand why people hate medleys, but the She Loves Me medley worked as an extended commerical. I was reminded the other day that I saw it in London on my honeymoon, and that my wife and I really enjoyed it. School of Rock still feels like the movie, but I think it will be helped with tourists looking for a fun, familiar, family-friendly show.

Some of the direction was just annoying, with the love of close-ups detracting from the experience of the choreography and staging. I certainly noticed that with Yorktown. On another Hamilton note, I wasn't surprised, but it was somewhat disappointing not to get Leslie Odom Jr. except in small doses. I understand why, but The Room Where it Happens would have brought down the house.

Shuffle Along did a nice job including all of the main performers and showing why I enjoyed the show so much, flaws notwithstanding.

Fiddler didn't help itself at all. Neither did Bright Star. I was less impressed with Waitress than others, but it was fine.

I'm sure On Your Feet is an entertaining show, but the performance just felt like an excuse for Gloria Estefan to upstage the people in the actual musical about her.

I thought Bright Star, Color Purple and School of Rock were best represented. Waitress and She Loves Me felt disjointed for me, I was underwhelmed and I love both of those shows.

I actually thought the Spring Awakening performance looked the most polished and rehearsed and suffered the least from the usual shoddy camera work from CBS. Everything else looked sloppy and under rehearsed, mostly due to the camera work, but also because of the disjointed and awkward transitions from song to song.

I was completely caught off guard by Jessie Mueller in Waitress.  They started that performance with an innocuous and rather silly song with lots of indicating and coffee shop props that kinda made me roll my eyes.  But, the second half of the performance with the pregnant Mueller at the couch?  WOW.  This woman has soul.  I'm not even familiar with the film or the plot of the musical so I wasn't even sure exactly what she was singing about, but I GOT IT.  As far as unifying song with emotion, I thought Mueller was in a class all her own.  Absolutely brilliant actress.

I kind of wish more shows had gone the Hamilton route. This year seemed to be a lot of intro/first songs or medleys.

She Loves Me was a bit too much. Like watching one of those promo videos they put together but performed live. Too disjointed.

Fiddler's decision to start in with "Sunrise, Sunset" was baffling.

Bright Star really sold Carmen well but I don't think it's the nearly the best or most interesting song from the show.

Shuffle Along was good but I just know that show builds to a bigger place both musically and in terms of choreography. And not much of it is "spoilery." Just disappointing in terms of other songs they could have gone with.

I think The Color Purple really worked, especially with the audience reaction. I want to see it now but I'm going to wait until Cynthia returns.

For a medley, I think Waitress at least managed to pull off including Bareilles without overshadowing the show by switching to Mueller. If that hadn't happened though, I would have said that they wasted their slot.

Also, yes, a lot of poor camerawork to capture some of these numbers. Too close generally or just a weird angle.

I think all the shows that performed did a great job with the exception of "On Your Feet".

On performances alone: Color Purple, She Loves Me, and Waitress. Hamilton was fine, but it didn't really need the boost. Bright Star was good but didn't do much for me. The rest were kind of forgettable.

Yeah and then they decided to stick a camera in Carmen Cusack's face and circle around her, so weird

I really loved Shuffle Along, Waitress, and The Color Purple. Those performances made me really wish I could go see those shows. I was so disappointed when She Loves Me started and I realized they were doing the same number from the today show where Jane only opens her mouth to make weird moan/grunts. I was pleasantly surprised when Zachary came on and realized there's be more but it felt like three separate performances as opposed to one cohesive performance. I loved the later half of Fiddler and wasn't thrilled with the beginning. I just thought it was an odd choice. I wish School of Rock had chosen I different song that show cased the kids more. I don't know you're in the band is good but it only features the few kids on the instruments. I enjoyed Spring Awakening quite a bit. I didn't like the camera work it should have focused more on who was signing not singing or trying to get the whole group in a wide shot.

Unfortuently, I found the other performances not very memorable. (Except Hamilton's which was good I just don't feel like discussing it)

I'm more disappointed that the ladies only made ignorable and somewhat awkward cameos... It's not Hamilton without the stunning Schuyler sisters.

I'm surprised by the lack of love for the Waitress performance on this thread. For me, hers and Cynthia's performances were in a class of their own.

that was one of my favorite shots of the night, when the camera spun around Carmen

Waitress definitely made the most of their 4 minutes. So much love for both the show and Jessie on my twitter timeline.

I enjoyed On Your Feet and I want to see that one the most out of them. I've wanted to see it for awhile now actually.

I thought the same thing.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I felt like SHE LOVES ME came off as very disjointed and got off to a rocky start with shortened Ilona and then the awkward inclusion of Sipos and Arpad...I think if they were going to go with a medley they should've stuck with the latter two or just one or the other would've been better. It was nice to see them perform but it certainly wasn't a standout of the night.

Still none of the performances were bad. I'd say Color Purple owned the night thanks to Cynthia Erivo and company.

My favorites were The Color Purple, Shuffle Along,  Waitress, and School of Rock.  I did like She Loves Me and Hamilton. Didn't care for Bright Star or On Your Feet. And Fiddler starting with Sunrise Sunset was odd.

Am I the only one who wasn't wild about the Hamilton number?  Having seen the show 3 times, the choreography just didn't come across on the screen

but nothing will ever come close to seeing the second preview at The Public

Waitress, Bright Star, Color Purple, SOR

i thought the Sara/Jessie combo worked great. Like the anchor in a relay. Gloria on the other hand should have butted out. It died when she came out.

carmen gave me chills just like when I saw her live. At least people will now have an idea when I tell them how amazing she is.

I was on the fence about CP but this pushed me in the direction of needing to see it. What an amazing year for best actress.

Fiddler? I just don't see DB carrying a show - and this one needs that.

Shuffle Along still looks like a mess but makes you want to see Audra before she leaves.

"Hamilton" performed three times. So, you know, objectively, I guess, them. I personally loved seeing "School of Rock", "Bright Star", and "Shuffle Along", though.

No, I wasn't crazy about it either.  They rarely showed the entire stage, which you really need to feel the energy of the dancing in 'Yorktown', and the whole cast just seemed exhausted to me, especially Lin.  Daveed almost jumped his 'We won!' line, and the whole thing just seemed sloppy and ragged.

Overall I think the telecast needed less Hamilton and more acknowledgment of the other shows.  Why wasn't everyone onstage for a finale? Why just Hamilton? A little odd.
