Posted: 3/5/12 at 7:53amI'm sure that California drama teacher is brilliant and all, but...I just don't know how you could make the audience dislike Fraulein Schneider no matter what the (lack of) talents by a director or actor. They'd both have to be completely stupid to kill the arc of that character. And she might have to wear a Nazi armband.

I've just discovered that Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary in Downton Abbey) can sing. She has a suitably sultry sound.

Posted: 3/7/12 at 7:46pmJust a comment on the age of Sally, in Goodbye to Berlin (the novel Cabaret is based on), Sally Bowles is 19 but looks 25 because of the way life has treated her already. Yes, the musical alters the story and character quite a bit, but I think the actress playing Sally should be in her 20s. An older Sally isn't as sympathetic, at least to me; if she looks 40, you just want to tell her to grow up, which I understand is the point of the character, I just find that there is a line where that stops being a vulnerable, sympathetic character trait.

I'll throw my hat in the ring for Carey Mulligan as Sally Bowles. She's a damn good actress and I think she could do wonders with the part.
Just curious, which way would this proposed revival go? Would you want it to use the Mendes revival script or go back to the original 1966 version, or somewhere in-between? I can't imagine a fully mounted production of the original ever happening again. People hear "Cabaret" and they immediately think (right after "Willkommen" of course) of "Mein Herr", "Maybe This Time" and "The Money Song"-- all songs added for the film. I think audiences for the most part would be disappointed if those numbers weren't included.

Posted: 3/7/12 at 8:11pmI like the idea of Evan Rachel Wood as Sally. I think with proper makeup and direction she could appear chillingly shredded by life. I like my Cabaret dark and f*cked up.

Posted: 3/7/12 at 10:48pmI can't even possibly contemplate a potential revival of Cabaret for at least 10 years. There are too many other musicals that we need to see revived, excluding Gypsy, (stage or film), ACL, Sweeney, Rent, Les Miz.....I vote that there should be at least 10 years between a new show and a revival or between a revival of a revival.

Posted: 3/8/12 at 2:54amI've given this further thought, and I would really like to see Marion Cotillard as Sally Bowles. Yes, I know Sally's supposed to be English (or at least American in certain circumstances) but I think Cotillard has the chops to pull it off. Hell, I would just like to see her on the stage, however that's looking very unlikely.

Posted: 3/8/12 at 11:46amEvan Rachel Wood, Carey Mulligan, and Marion Cotillard are all perfect choices. Hell, why not have all of 'em. The last revival of Cabaret had a revolving door of Sallys coming through during its run.

Considering that she revealed a decent singing voice in My Week with Marilyn, Michelle Williams would probably be fab.
