Whoopi as Mother Superior?

WOS has just tweeted that Whoopi is rumoured to replace Sheila for a limited season (probably 30th August to Closing night). I know it's just a rumour but, that cant be right?

Whoopi as Mother Superior?

As much as I love Whoopi, please no. Put Harriet Thorpe or June Brown in there!

We can expect a huge Sister Act announcement on Thursday morning. Could it be Whoopi?

Whoopi as Mother Superior?

Oh look!
Stunt casting and miscasting all in one go!
#10

Whoopi as Mother Superior?

I love her, but if the film is anything to do by she would be horrendously miscast in this role!

Whoopi as Mother Superior?

She is a hugely talented and savvy performer. I'd give her a chance.

And anyone who thinks she wasn't hilarious in Xanadu will get my rollerskate run over their face!

Whoopi as Mother Superior?

I feel that something would be lost between the chemistry of Dolores and the Mother Superior if this role were to be played by Whoopi.

The idea of a instutional white nun and a black lounge singer adds a comedic dimension to the piece that worked so well in the film (Whoopi and Maggie Smith) and again on stage with Patina and Sheila.

Just give the role to Judi Dench!!!

Whoopi as Mother Superior?

I think Judi Dench would be fantastic in that role. As for June Brown & Harriet Thorpe - I have absolutely no idea who they are LOL.

Whoopi as Mother Superior?

June Brown plays Dot in Eastenders and Harriet Thorpe was Madame Morrible in Wicked.

Whoopi as Mother Superior?

Thanks jamiekenny - I've never seen an episode of Eastenders so I guess that doesn't help my knowledge lol. When I saw Wicked in the West End, I saw the original WE cast with Miriam Margolyes as Mme Morrible so can't judge Harriet Thorpe's suitability for the Mother Superior in Sister Act as I've never seen her in anything. But just about anyone would be better in the role than Whoopi lol

Am I right in thinking Harriet Thorpe was the receptionist in The Brittas Empire and was also in Absolutely Fabulous?

Whoopi as Mother Superior?

You are right Kc2

Also, as much as I love Whoopi...... this is such a miscast. BUT, I always like to give people a chance, so I'll reserve judgement until I see her in it!

Whoopi as Mother Superior?

June Brown recently did a calendar girls stint and had several stage roles pre-eastender.

Whoopi as Mother Superior?

I don't know why this would be construed as miscasting. Whoopi is a wonderful actress who has spent her career playing characters remote from herself. The pairing of an older cynical buttoned down (figuratively speaking) Black Nun with a young free spirited Black Nun sounds delicious to me. And an interesting change.

I'm presuming this is a preview of the Broadway production to come.
Faced with these Loreleis, what man can moralize!

Whoopi as Mother Superior?

You're so not helping bob8rich! lol Apparently Ms Thorpe (now I know I have the right one) played Mrs Lovett in Sweeney and Mme Thenardier in Les Mis though I have never seen her on stage so can't comment as to her performance(s).

Whoopi as Mother Superior?

Thanks for trying to be so helpful, kc2! I assume she was in the tour of the John Doyle Sweeney - I only saw the West End cast, with Karen Mann as Mrs Lovett. But I've now googled Harriet Thorpe and found that she was Fraulein Kost in the Rufus Norris Cabaret revival and Ida in the John Barry/Don Black musical version of Brighton Rock at the Almeida, both of which I saw! I can't remember her from either of those shows so I couldn't have been particularly impressed LOL.

Anyway all the speculation is now moot as it's been officially confirmed that Whoopi will be playing the Mother Superior when Sheila leaves. (Though it's not been revealed who will be taking over from Whoopi after her short run - so maybe all the people mentioned in this thread are still in the running!)
