Whoopi isn't starring in the London production.
Casting is to be announced in 2 weeks.
Considering that John Owen Jones was working on something with Alan Menkin after his time on Broadway was cut short, I have to wonder if he's going to be part of it.

The lead actress they desire is currently trying to get out of 2 contracts she is committed to for next summer, one theatre the other TV. She wants this show more than anything.
So the news, for those that are confused, is that Goldberg will be joining the producing team for the further life of the stage adaptation, not the cast.

I had the chance to see it out in Los Angeles, and it was just fantastic. It's a riot of a show, and a ton of fun to just sit and enjoy. By far the best song is "Raise Your Voice," in which the nuns have the obligatory "We can actually sing!" moment. From then on, the show is just FUN.
"I'm almost positive Marc Shaiman wrote some additional songs."
Shaiman wrote the score for the film.

Even the negative reviews for this have liked a lot of the score so as a Menken fan I'm excited--and hope we get a recording.

in all the links attached, did i miss who they'd "like" to have for the lead, if she can get out of her contracts?

I wonder whether they're going to stick to that artwork...
Why are singing nuns so damn entertaining?
The other day Whoppi mentioned that FOR COLORED GIRLS..... would be opening this Spring.
"Take Me to Heaven" is stuck in my head now. I REALLY hope they keep "The Life I Never Led."
*EDIT*

yeah i saw the show when it was in LA (or Pasadena to be specific) and i loved the score! when the nuns learned to sing was fantastic as well as the finale number... the book needed to be tweaked but i personally enjoyed it... it's a very crowd pleasing show and very upbeat... my one complaint was that the song LIFE I NEVER LED (which is a beautiful song) pretty much is the 11 o'clock number of act 2 and it's sung by the quiet and shy nun... right after that number Delores had a big solo which should have been the big 11 o'clock number but it failed miserably... also the fact that Dawnn Lewis didn't quite have the oomph for the role but was still passable... anyways... great show and i hope it succeeds... i love any alan menken score really
I agree. That song fell flat, and when I saw it, she didn't have proper diction. I had a hard time understanding what she was singing.
While I haven't seen the show I have heard numerous things about it, and hope that the necessary changes were made. If i lived in London I would definitely buy tickets. I hope we get a recording.
Actress they want have tv and theatre commitments. Oh please God, let it be Audra.
Um...no...

Whoopi said there wouldn't be songs from the movie because Motown was using them for something else and new songs were being written. She said the story was different and said they had a great actress to play the part of dolores but didn't mention her name. Sounds like the name of the movie and the name of the musical are the only common denominator.

Well and umm the basic characters and story are the same--singer witnesses a crime, hides from mob as a nun. It's not just the name :P

"I saw it at the Pasadena Playhouse. It certainly had a lot going for it - the problem was in the casting, especially the leading lady."
I second that. If they announce Dawnn Lewis returning I will be highly disappointed.
Folk who saw it in Pasadena--did anyone else really love "Fabulous Baby"? I did, and I'm really sad it got cut. I'm betting what plays London is substantially different from the CA production. I'm also hoping "You'll All Go to Hell" or whatever that song was in the biker bar is gone.

fabulous baby is not cut. it's sung about three times through the show.
they worked on the show in london this past march in a workshop and tightened things. didn't make huge changes, just lots of fine tuning. not sure what they've done since then. i assume they've done more substantial work post-hearing the whole show out loud.
lots of great music was in the workshop, and they flew in a certain up and coming American girl to play Whoopie's role. She was great, and I hope they get her for the London run.
"you'll all go to hell" song in the biker bar is not cut. Deloris's 11 o'clock number certainly didnt fall flat in the London workshop.

Well, that's nice to hear. They cut it and replaced it with "Too Much to Live For" after the Pasadena run. It played Atlanta with the new number and several reprises, but I'm glad to hear they went back to Fabulous Baby, because that song is awesome.
