Straight from her mouth its to take its first London bow in May and Broadway Debut "in the fall". I am SUPER excited for this! This is my favorite movie of all time. Whoopi didn't say who Deloris will be but she said "shes simply amazing".

This should be great! (Hopefully.)
Did she confirm it on The View?
Somehow despite every discussion of movie-stage adaptation, I never once thought of this. And it HAS music in it already! Oy vey. Anyhoo, I'm actually excited about this, at it is one of my favorite comedies. Not sure I can see anyone else as Doloris, but I'm willing to wait and see.
well it's already booking in London, so definitely happening, I am slightly worried... but it depends on cast!

I'm almost positive Marc Shaiman wrote some additional songs.
Am I wrong here? This is what I thought..
Let me add a few things..Whoopi said...
"Alan Menken who did all the Disney stuff has written all new songs and a great score for it."
"It is not the movie at all. I'm trying to show people we can still do Sister Act for a whole new generation but make it newer and fresher".
It was confirmed in the UK 3 days ago.
Bookings are already open for its May premiere!
The Palladium has been lined up for it for 2 months now!- where's Whoopi been???

Menken. Shaiman.
same thing.
heh
saw it in Atlanta at the Alliance with Dawnn Lewis. Lots of potential, still needs some work. It had already been at Pasadena Playhouse previously. Glad the West End is interested!

"still needs some work."
they've been doing a lot of rewrites in the past year or so.
there was an article, somewhere, about it...
For those having trouble picturing anyone but Whoopi as Deloris Van Cartier, there's this: I'm sure you guys already know this, but in case you don't, did you know that Bette Midler was originally the person they had in mind for the part? Obviously her Deloris would have been entirely different, but when I think about what her take might have been, it makes me excited to see someone else play the role. Especially in a musical. Heck, I'm even excited to see who plays/how they cast the Sister Mary Patrick and Sister Mary Robert roles (Kathy Najimy and Wendy Makkena, the quiet nun who eventually belts, respectively). But again - this has always been one of my favorite comedies.
it'll be interesting to see how this turns out since it's an all new take on the show. I still hope it's good and would love to see it whenever it arrives on B'way(possible Fall '09 debut).

"This is my favorite movie of all time."
Now how does something like that happen?
...Did she announce it on The View?
Feed the burbs
Tepid a show
Tepid, vapid...TITLES THEY KNOW...
now, BORSTAL, if Meloni was playing Delores' former pimp/pursuer, you know you'd be there....
as to Midler, the musical did use Delores' Vegas act as the opening number...could see Midler doing that in a heartbeat.
and LIZA/LORD/PATTI: remember Hammerstein..."it's not the writing, it's the re-writing"....

I have a....recording of the Atlanta production. The music is cute, really fun. There's something Dreamgirls-esque about it, but I had just watched the Dreamgirls movie before listening to it, so who knows.
I like it though!
One thing is for certain, it will be a very, very big production. The London Palladium is one of the largest theatres in London/UK.
I hope the re-write includes some of the songs from the 1st Sister Act.
And hopefully there will be a Sister Act 3.
Whoopi?
Gotta say i was not convinced by moving the time period back to the Disco Seventies...some of the music was fun, but it seemed to remove us a bit from empathisizing with the characters. They were caught between a weird kind of naturalism and commentary on the period. They did some smart things, musically, with the lead's two love interests, however....and Beth Malone ROCKED as the mousy-noviate-who-can-secretly-belt. Her song was terrific. The Mother Superior's stuff was not as successful (in writing or casting, though she was a fine actress, not that great a singer or songs in wrong keys for her). The Najimy and Wickes roles, again, funny actresses, but not musically expressed as sell as the mouse was.
I saw it at the Pasadena Playhouse. It certainly had a lot going for it - the problem was in the casting, especially the leading lady. With Whoopie I think the show can really run.
Wickedrocks, yes, she annpunced it on The View this morning. I would suspect that if you go the The View's website, it might be in the video Hot Topics recap.
From what I hear, Menken should let this one just die and focus on Leap Of Faith which is supposed to be fantastic.
I don't remember where (and I could be wrong) but I thought I read that Raul Esparza was set to star in Leap Of Faith next season.
MALLARDO, did i miss something? i don't think Whoopi is planning to star. The score as written now would be very challenging for her to sing, IMHO.
