Why Did RENT Flop?

By all means I am no RENT head, I'v only seen half of the movie, and never seen it on stage.
Anyways, I checked boxofficemojo.com and it said the production cost of RENT was 40 million and it made only 29 in the US.
Why do you think it wasn't so successful?

Because of all the reasons already mentioned, plus the fact that every single musical number landed with a thud.
And because it's a terrible, awful, vile, scourge of a movie.

I don't care that they totally fixed her voice in a studio. I care that it SOUNDS like they totally fixed her voice in a studio. Every time her pitch is corrected she sounds like a robot.
A robot Mimi would have totally made this movie better.

Chris Columbus - absolutely the wrong director for the film.
Stephen Chbosky - wrote a horrendous screenplay with terrible dialogue and underdeveloped characters and relationships. I'm an aspiring screenwriter myself and I'm fairly certain that if I were given the same amount of time, resources, etc, that Chbosky had, I could probably turn out much better screenplay that would do justice to the material.
The original Broadway cast - much as I love them, many of their performances simply didn't translate to film. Some came across as too old. I think they should have done the film with a cast of age appropriate fresh faced actorsa and actresses.

The movie had its moments, but overall it was tacky. They may have had something if they'd stuck more closely to the Broadway script and eliminated any shots of characters singing on bikes, subways or mountaintops.

Chris Columbus wasn't sastified with taking all the fun out of the Harry Potter films, so he decided to drop a big turd on this movie as well.
Why do people still let him behind a camera.
Oh, what might have been.
