Why I walked out of IMPRESSIONISM — Page 2

Sorry, I pretty well knew what I was getting into with Copenhagen, so I read the play several times before actually seeing it. If there was EVER a snob hit, Copenhagen was it. I was in the neighborhood quite a lot at the time and the expression of the majority of people's faces when leaving the theatre was that of numbness. What a pretentious bore! (Okay, go ahead and shoot.)

The joy of seeing Moose Murders was the expressions on the audience's faces during intermission (I saw one of the two performances that Eve Arden did). The closest I can come to describing it is the expressions on the audience's faces when viewing Springtime for Hitler in The Producers -- and that was purposeful.

They're taking out the intermission eh? Probably to prevent massive walkouts during the intermission. Looks like I'll avoid this one. I've already suffered through American Buffalo, Hedda Gabler, To Be Or Not To Be, and Mourning Becomes Electra this season.

Christ, I'm dragging my ass to the city Saturday night to see it. Now, I worry.

All comments from this thread from people who have not seen it. I know that Yankeefan and WAT love to go to first previews of shows, I usually do too. But yes, sometimes those first few shows are a mess and need improvement (actually, almost always need improvement). Sometimes they get better, sometimes not. Just wanted to encourage people to see the show before making judgements about it. Some of my favorite shows are ones that yankeefan hates, yet I don't rag on the ones that he loves and I dislike. I go see it and have my own opinion. Everyone on the board should do the same.

I agree with Liotte. Also, I cannot imagine leaving a play at an intermission. I suppose no-one will think this is a fair comparison but me. I'm a retired teacher, and to me leaving early at a show would be akin to saying to a child in the middle of the school year "I don't like you. I'm not going to teach you anymore." Or like getting a present and throwing it away before it's complete unwrapped. I just cannot accept that people who would do this on any kind of consistent basis are true theatre lovers. I don't read reviews until after a show, I try not to listen to the buzz. I buy tickets to shows I have interest in and make up my own mind.

I saw this last week. While it was cool to see Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen on stage, that wore off quickly. I didn't see the point to this show. Yeah, they fall in love at the end, but it seemed so badly done. A lot of good talent in need of better material. I will admit that I really enjoyed the last scene, but it didn't make up for the inertia of the previous 7 scenes.

I noticed everyone around me checking their watches. The scene changes were painfully long at times.

I've gotten to the point that I don't care if there are 'stars' in a production. I just some decent material to enjoy.

I saw 33 VARIATIONs yesterday afternoon (and really liked it!). During intermission I had a nice chat with the couple who were sitting beside me. They had seen IMPRESSIONISM the night before and felt it was excellent. Yes, the intermission is gone, but they felt it was a fine production.
