b/c at the stage door the cast smiled when they signed my playbill so that means we're BFF's now. Plus, I expect something back in return.

Posted: 12/18/08 at 6:05pmI never really understood this either. I don't know, maybe I haven't been enough of a diehard fan of a show. It's a nice gesture on the part of the person who makes it, but still, what's the point?

I have NO clue. I don't get giving gifts to the cast at all. Aren't their paychecks enough? (Especially from those that see a show repeatedly?)
I have friends that do it, but I'll never understand it.

The same reason that people dress up like characters from [Harry Potter/ Lord of the Rings/ Star Wars] to go to the movies.
I suppose it's a more healthy way of expressing obsession than John Hinckley Jr. did with Jodie Foster...
#6why do people feel the need to make the cast a scrapbook?
Posted: 12/18/08 at 6:36pmBecause for many people the real show happens at the stage door.

It's freaky.
Some I've seen are just barf-inducing and stalker-ish.
Why would ANYONE want to be given a crappy scrap book with loads of sickly poems about how great you are, hundreds of photos of yourself, 'sweet' stickers and cards combined with giving reasons of why you're awesome using the letters in your name and 'you know you're a ______ fan when ______'.
Don't forget referring to yourself as a Fanoweth, Fanzel...and, I dunno - Shofana Beanzonites.
It's just...so...lame.
Sending letters of how much you appreciate their craft, requesting an autograph or maybe a drawing - fine, I'm sure they'd like that...but know where the line is!

I've always found the idea of giving gifts to cast members quite creepy. I know I'd be freaked out if some random stranger wanted to give me a "gift".

As a performer, I have always been touched that someone would go to the trouble of giving a gift. I have saved the letters and drawings for children who have seen shows I've been in.
It isn't "creepy" at all, just a sign that your performance meant more than just applause at the curtain call.

Letters and drawings, ok.
A scrapbook, not ok. It's stalker-esque. Its the kind of thing MTF3 would give to Emma Zaks if he met her.

I particularly love FOOD gifts. Then the giver refuses to believe that the givee simply throws out the food. (The only exception would be sealed pre packaged food -- and even then they are probably wary,)
While I'm sure that close to 100 percent of givers food is fine, a performer simply would not take the risk. I don't care WHAT the cast tells you. They aren't eating your fudge!

Posted: 12/19/08 at 8:29amI hate stagedoor folk in general. Not only are they creepy, but they're rude, hogging the performer from people who might actually want to have a healthy interaction with them. (I saw this at the Little Mermaid stagedoor, when Sherie Rene Scott stalkers were physically pushing 8-year-old kids out of the way to get pictures.)

^ There was a woman like that when I saw The Homecoming.
As for scrapbooks, it's a bit much. Although I admire the people who have the chutzpah to make them and give them to the cast. That's something I could never do. As for food, it's one thing if you're in/working the show. Where I worked, there was a good chance you were going to find food in the green room, whether someone's mom made cookies or there were left over snacks from change over. A few times I ran out and bought candy for some of the actors, but only because it was the end of the run and I had enjoyed working with them. It wasn't as though I went up to them at a stagedoor and handed them a huge tray of fudge or a bag of taffy.

Most likely. Those are the ones that you don't give scrapbooks to :P

The actors are not going to PUBLICALLY say that they think it's creepy. Of course, they are going to tell the giver that it's great. I'm sure GADS of it ends up in the garbage...within minutes.
