If a movie is made (which I really hope one isn't) I think it HAS to be the book. I know the musical came from a failed attempt at making a movie, but the musical just won't, CAN'T, transfer to film.
And did anyone else throw up in the mouth at the idea of Kelly Clarkson as Elphaba...because I just did.

It will never be of the book. Well, let me put it this way, the only way it could be of the book is if the musical film version is done first and the adaptation of the book comes after (many years after) straight to DVD or TV.

Like I said on otherthreds, Wicked excels on stage because it has an audience reaction. It would be absolutely terrible on screen.
Can you imagine "It's good to see me, isn't it." And the bubble, ngd, and flying wouldn't work at all.
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."

The book would make a better movie, but even then, it would have to be truncated to the detriment of the story. That's a very hard book to edit. (The stage show proves this.)
The book would, however, make an excellent miniseries, but I don't know if they'd ever want to make that.
I don't know about that, it's not like those lines HAVE to be in there.
I think a good creative team could pull off a very good movie adaptation of it - and Wicked has a HUGE advantage to work onscreen that other musicals don't: it's full of visual references from an already very succesful musical film, so the singing and musical numbers can already be justified.

Demi Moore at one point (before the musical was written) had the rights to the book and wanted to do it as a television miniseries, playing Elphaba.
I don't really see a film version of the musical being very effective either (unless perhaps it were animated) but I'm pretty sure given the play's huge success - if it ever gets done for the big screen - it will be as the musical version.
LOL, I'm not talking about lines, I don't mean that they need to include every scrap of dialogue. I mean that the book, which is fantastic, is made up 5 very distinct parts. For the stage version, so much was changed that the butchering of these parts can (almost) be excused. But if they made a movie based off the book, you're not telling the right story if any of those five parts are cut out or glossed over. Yes, I know they do this in book-to-movie adaptations all the time, but the "Wicked" book has a very distinct method of storytelling that really begs for its length.
Personally, I hope I never see "Wicked" on any screen, but if I have to, I hope it's years and years from now, when people aren't still freaking out about the musical. That'll allow them to tell the story properly.
True, but we are talking decades before the "freaking out" comes to an end. I don't even think I'll have all my teeth or hair by the time that happens.

I think that Wicked (movie musical) would be rather successful for many reasons. Unlike Rent and The Producers, Wicked already would have a huge audience base APART from Broadway because of The Wizard of Oz. Also, it would be considered a family movie, and family fantasy movies (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, etc...) are generally very successful especially if released around the holidays.
The world has waited a long time for another successful Oz movie and The Wiz and Return to Oz just didn't cut it. If marketed correctly, Wicked would not rely just on its Broadway fan base, but to the billions who have seen and love The Wizard of Oz. Updated On: 3/15/06 at 04:48 PM
jasobres, your cast wishlist a while back was perfect.
ps- if kelly clarkson ever dawned the green skin thatis elphaba, i WOULD have to shoot myself. ugh she is horrible-- she has a nice voice, yes, but don't insult the character in such way. good lord.
hear my song; it was made for the time when you don't know where to go, listen to the song that i sing, you'll be fine..
Elphaba...Neve Campbell or Jenna Leigh Green G(a)linda...Reese Witherspoon Fyerio...Kristopher Cussik The Wizard...Mel Brooks or Alan Cumming Morrible...Whoopi (son't shoot me) Goldberg or Carol Kane Nessarose...Alicia Witt Dr. Dillamond..Zach Braff (?) Boq... I got noting! The Witch's Mother... Ana Gasteyer The Witch's Father... Norbert Leo Butz
I think that's a little lame. Wicked won't get made into a movie or anything, and that reese witherspon wanted a movie is DUMB. A girl flying in the movie isnt AMAZING. it IS on stage! And the singing isnt even that great. people will jsut say, oh its rehearsals. Rent didn't even get critical acclaim!
