Wicked in London

I'm just wondering if anyone has heard any news about the possible opening of "Wicked" over here in the West End? I heard a few rumours that it could open in 2006...?
Any help greatly appreciated!

As far as I know a few venues have been looked at but no decision has been made.

re: Wicked in London

Hey which dance forum are auditioning for dancers?

re: Wicked in London

I have now been told by RUT that the producers of Wicked did have another look at possible London venues and only the Drury Lane is of any interest to them. As we know this Theatre is currently occupied with a long-run show so we might not see Wicked here in London for some time.

re: Wicked in London

Why ONLY The Drury Lane? Because of its size?

Dominion is big, so is Apollo Victoria. Not to mention Palladium.

"Hey which dance forum are auditioning for dancers?"

The forum is not auditioning, it was just gossip between users on the blochworld site, speculation I believe but if I hear anything else I will post

re: Wicked in London

Based on the configuration of the box section of Dury Lane, I cant see why the producers would want that theatre. They must want it purely for its size (seating) unless they plan to scale down the proscenium set for Wicked (they use alot of wooden scafolding and cog wheels (i hope they dont plan to use the scaled down version that is used on the Tour.

Also dury lane has one of the biggest stages, Wicked doesnt really need a deep stage to work.

I would have gone with the Apolo Victoria, mainly because you can change the colours of the Auditorium during the show to reflect the mood, and it is a big house.

Didn't they run Starlight in The Victoria? I don't remember where i saw it, but i think it was there. That must have required a pretty large venue. Sounds ideal for Wicked. Perhaps the Drury Lane setting is because of Covent Garden?

re: Wicked in London

Yes, The Apollo Victoria was the home for STARLIGHT EXPRESS for 14 years. The original seating capacity of the house was around 2400 seats, for STARLIGHT's set and tracks they removed about 1100 seats.

I don't think the location has anything to do with the choosing The Drury Lane over The A.V., I think S.E. showed that a show can be successful in a theatre that's not located near Covent Garden. Of course the Drury Lane is more famous and has housed a lot of hit musicals in the past.

re: Wicked in London

They have found a solution.

Wicked will open at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in a year!!

No exact date is known at this time.
I hope we can enjoy the first Broadway-cast here in London.

re: Wicked in London

A lot of people have heard from cast members about the possible production in London next year. The conductor (a friend of mine) has told me that although it is not yet definite, they are really trying for an autumn opening (October?) Fingers-crossed, everyone!

re: Wicked in London

Now that Saturday Night Fever has announced its closure in February, I imagine we will be hearing an announcement fairly soon about what will open there next year, strongly rumoured to be a short run of Movin' Out, followed by a rather big Stephen Schwartz musical...

re: Wicked in London

Yeh, I've heard its due out in late 2006. I went to see it in New York when it first came out it is amazing. I'm also reading the book which is also excellent bit weird in places but good.

I've trained all my life in performing arts and i really want to go into musicals. Wicked is the main musical i desperately want to be in so if anyone hears about any auditions whether its for London's westend, broadway, etc please let me know & contact me.

I've also heard there closing Les miserables to bring hairspray & on les mis's 21st birthday its the last night. Also women in white is closing so ive heard.

re: Wicked in London

i wouldnt put a date on it, i was told by a manager at the apollo victoria that it will be very very late next year. i wreckon around now time. movin Out has not been confirmed for a filler show, nothing has, but whatever does will get 13 weeks in there.

Casting/auditions dont start till february at the earliest for wicked.

re: Wicked in London

Movin Out is confirmed - look out for it on Thurs.
13 Weeks from April.
Wicked starts previews end of October and opens mid/late November

re: Wicked in London

Les Miserables will DEFINATELY NOT be closing on 21st birthday. It's booking through to 6th January 2007 and Cameron Mackintosh would want it to overtake Cats as much as possible.

re: Wicked in London

The fact that a show is booking through Jan 6, 2007 does not mean a thing yet. SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER was booking through April 2006 and now is closing in mid-February 2006.

re: Wicked in London

Oh thats so annoying... "the show wont close its booking to.." Booking to dates mean nothing!! Shows can close tommorow even if they are booking to 2008!

Hairspray will not be replacing Les Mis! Les mis will close early 2007 as The Queens is being completly redone. Cam Mac is building a new theatre on The Upper Circle of The Queens (called the Sondhiem) and the face of The Queens is being rebuilt to be like it used to be. The work will take 18 months at a push so when Les Mis closes (2007) a new show will not enter The Queens until very late 2008 and its likley to be a Cam Mac show so Id expect Oliver! to open the theatre.

Back to Wicked, It previews Begining of Now and opens Late Nov last i heard, but it is definalty opening at The Apollo Vicotia.

Spamalot is opening at The Palace Theatre in October too
