Posted: 2/3/08 at 4:46pmI have the 2003 recording with Peters -- it was released commercially and, as far as I know, is still readily available.

Posted: 2/3/08 at 4:53pmIt's a studio recording, Ed. I don't know why it was made, but it has provided me with endless hours of entertainment. It does include "If Momma Was Married" and "Gotta Get a Gimmick" in addition to Medford's jaw dropping renditions of Rose's numbers.

WOW Smaxie any ideas on how we can add that to our GYPSY cast recording collections?
Thanks
#28re: Will They Record Lupone's Gypsy?
Posted: 2/3/08 at 6:22pmYeah, Smaxie, I too thought I had them all. Now, I really want to hear me some Kay Medford. But, what am I to do?

"Isn't a new film of the show in the works?"
Yeah, there was a rumor a while back that it would happen with Anne Hathaway playing the title role and (I think) Catherine Zeta-Jones as Mama Rose. Someone correct me if I'm wrong about the latter...

Posted: 2/3/08 at 8:03pmhmm... Catherine Zeta-Jones... interesting choice... I think she looks too young for mama.

Posted: 2/3/08 at 8:07pmThe movie with Zeta-Jones was some NYpost rumour. Rob Marshall is busy right now with NINE.

TheatreKid,
I checked on Amazon.com; a used copy's available on LP only (over $35.00).
#34re: Will They Record Lupone's Gypsy?
Posted: 2/3/08 at 8:45pmPlease, everyone... do not pay more than $3.50 for the Kay Medford Gypsy. I'd never forgive myself.
#36re: Will They Record Lupone's Gypsy?
Posted: 2/3/08 at 8:58pmDepends on what price you put on this kind of entertainment! By the time Medford gets done with the songs, the Roz Russell tracks are sounding pretty good by comparison.

OH. I was under the impression this whole time that you thought Medford was jaw dropping in a good way. i guess not.
Russells outtakes are a lot of fun to listen to.

The Medford recording is the only one I'm missing.
Although, the Florence Henderson recording is pretty special too.

Posted: 2/4/08 at 12:46pmI think the problem a Patti-recording might run across is a saturated market... is there enough of a demand for another Gypsy recording (especially only a few years after Bernadette)? I don't think there is anything that says they can't record it. I LOVE Pattie, and I would definitely buy this recording, but I'm not sure if my $15.99 will be enough to make it worth the risk! Sad : (

"I don't see how anyone can deny that LuPone is the best sung Rose since Merman."
Not only can I see how someone could deny it, I would deny it myself.
If you're confining yourself to women who've played the role on Broadway, she's the most vocally endowed since Merman, but that doesn't mean she sang it best.
If you're not confining it to Broadway, I've heard other women sing it better, and I'd bet that some I haven't heard (like Karen Morrow) also sang it better.
I think she is probably capable of singing it very well, but I sure don't think she did at City Center.
"I thought I was some kind of Gypsy expert, having seen it every time since Merman, but I never even knew about the Kay Medford. Is it a full cast recording or just Rose's songs? Was it ever on CD? Was it a commercial or a pirate recording?"
It's a pirate recording,
Kay Medford sounds just like a pirate singing Rose's songs.
Anyway, I would think the upcoming production will receive a cast recording.

I think it needs to be recorded, yes, but...
"I don't see how anyone can deny that LuPone is the best sung Rose since Merman."
Neither are the best sung (or the best acted) Rose. That prize goes to Angela Lansbury.

"I LOVE Pattie"
You'd think you'd spell her name right.

Based on recordings, I respectively disagree, jv92.

Posted: 2/4/08 at 9:12pmThat's okay. I will say Patti comes close to Lansbury both singing and acting wise. Very close.

Peters' GYPSY was absolutely stunning vocally. I have the 2003 Revival and am just thrilled with that and really have no desire to buy Lupones'.
to each his own.

Peters' performance was "stunning" vocally the same way Kay Medford's performance was "jaw-dropping." Both are painful.
But Smaxie--what about Dolores Gray's recording of "Rose's Turn," which she does along with narration of the plot and an anlysis of Rose's psychology?
How do you rate that?
