I'd assume so, but unsure if they struck a deal when they recorded the Peters disc, that no Gypsy disc is to be produced for x amount of years...

Any news?

They BETTER. It would be a shame if LuPone's Rose goes unrecorded (officially). No matter what they say about her performance, I don't see how anyone can deny that LuPone is the best sung Rose since Merman. She deserves a recording. Updated On: 2/2/08 at 04:00 PM

I don't own any recordings of Gypsy. If she records it, I will buy it.

oh they better...many of us have waited a long time for her to sing the hell out of those songs...plus Benanti was great as Louise...and what about "gimmick"...this is the only production that made me laugh out loud during that number....This cd will sell beyond B Peters!!!!

I'm sure Laurents, or Lupone, will push for a disc. I just hope this Gypsy doesn't have the low numbers it did a few seasons back.

I hope so. I own all the GYPSY recording even the Bette Midler's TV special with Christine Ebersole.

Well, there's an argument against.

But I hope they do, I'd love a recording of LuPone blowing that score out of the water!

re: Will They Record Lupone's Gypsy?

No collection is complete without THIS recording of Gypsy. In fact, they could have just stopped recording Gypsy after La Medford got done with it. It's just that special.

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

It would be EPIC if Great Performances decided to tape it also.

"It would be EPIC if Great Performances decided to tape it also."

I wouldn't dream of getting my hopes up., but... Great Performances wanted to record the 2003 Revival, but Laurents wouldn't allow them to because of his dislike for that production.

I would assume they would record it...I mean it is Patti!

But if not, I would say they'd probably have a "promo" recording like they did for Sunset Boulevard when Betty Buckely did it on Broadway with like 5ish songs on it?!

but BRICK Laurents is directing so i would think he would want his version preserved... his whole reason for doing it was so that it could be done the "correct" way, so you would think he would want it recorded for posterity

Upcoming Shows: Gypsy, Dead Mans Cell Phone, Xanadu, Sunday in the Park with George

That's what I mean. Hopefully, Great Performances would be interested in recording it because Laurents would surely agree this time.

Are Great Performances usually sold on DVD after airing?

Yes they are.

Live at Lincoln Center shows don't get released on DVD. They are only aired twice, and are never seen again. PIAZZA was part of that program, it's too bad it couldn't be released - though I liked how they aired it live.

The LitP live broadcast was fairly atrocious.

The performances were of course wonderful, but not captured well.

The quality wasn't great, but I assumed that was because it was being aired live.

I just hope this Gypsy doesn't have the low numbers it did a few seasons back.

Well GYPSY is show that never sells out - even with Merman. (Sondheim noted their advance was very low for a show with a star or Merman's stature.) But the Peters revival hardly had low numbers: Average in 2003 was 83% Average in 2004 was 70%. Perhaps not quite enough to meet their nut, but hardly low numbers.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Smaxie,

I thought I was some kind of Gypsy expert, having seen it every time since Merman, but I never even knew about the Kay Medford. Is it a full cast recording or just Rose's songs? Was it ever on CD? Was it a commercial or a pirate recording?
