^ Same here. Not just for LuPone (who was stunning), but for Benanti, Gaines, and Larkin.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Oh, come on guys. Leave Bernadette alone. She wasn't THAT bad. Vocally stunning? No. She did act the hell out of it though. Deserved the Tony in my book.

Well, she had to do SOMETHING.

Smaxie - thank you for reminding me I have a copy of that GYPSY gem of Kay Medford's. I wonder just how that album came about? It was recorded in London while she was doing FUNNY GIRL. Don't you love how they have to say on the cover just who she is? Well, at least the orchestra sounds good.

I doubt that the Lupone GYPSY will be recorded, the market is already crowded as it is and it isn't cheap to do so. Might a live recording be viable?

I almost bought Kay Medford's Studio recording of Gypsy until my friend told me they had it, and gave it to me. To tell the truth, (and as Smaxie said) it gives endless hours of enjoyment. When I recieved it, I couldn't wait to hear her Rose's Turn. I turned my speakers on even louder than before, which was a huge mistake. Her shrill voice pierced my speakers, and I rushed to turn them down. I really want my hearing back.

There are several labels competing to record the Lupone Gypsy, so I do expect there will be news on that front soon.

Back to Medford and her "Rose's Turn"... what she does with "Momma's gotta let go" cannot even be described. I re-listened to it yesterday morning to try to put it into words, and I cannot. It's something between a snarl and a seizure.

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

I'm really interested in hearing the Medford recording now! Too bad I don't have a record player, or $35 spare dollars, lol!

Kay Medford was, it should be stated, a wonderfully droll comic actress.

It's just her Rose that stank.

I hope not! While she was wonderful in the dialogue scenes, I thought she either drove the music too hard or stretched it out of shape.

I sure hope so! That's one of the main reason I'm happy that this is getting revived; So that we can buy the cast recording!

"It's something between a snarl and a seizure."

That's exactly it! I turned Kay's "Rose's Turn" on during a break while the Superbowl was on, and as soon as we heard "Here she is boys!", my friend rushed to the speakers and shut them off.

And her "Then where would you be, Ms. Gypsy Rose Lee?" is atrocious. But the funniest one (besides the one you mentioned), are here "For me!"'s. Boy, are they something special!

I love Medford's attempts at sustained notes. It's like some sort of "long note goes here" parenthetical marking. She also does amazing work adding extra syllables, like "Some people can get a thrilla, knitting sweaters and sitting stilla."

Haha, yup. I think she would've made a much better Mazeppa. She's just too special not to be.

To the person who said they have all Gypsy recordings save for the Medford - exactly what do you mean? ALL versions, including the plethora of jazz covers? The Annie Ross album? (I think I'm remembering that correctly). The South African Cast album starring Libby Morris? Yes, you have that one? I do. I have all the jazz covers, the Medford, and am fairly comfortable in saying I'm complete, Gypsy-wise.

Can someone friendly give me the chance to hear Medford's recording?
I think the one GYPSY recording I'm dying to listen to is the Mexican cast recording with Sylvia Pinal and her rock star daughter Alejandra Guzman.

I do love her ad-lib during Some People - "and get my kids O-U-T-T out". Magic.

BK, I remember being in London 20 years ago and a store there had the South African cast of GYPSY, secondhand for 32 pounds (a huge cost at the time). I wish now I'd parted with the money.

In response to BK: I don't know about the person who you're refering too, but I have almost every version of Gypsy (yes, including the Jazz covers), and I have to say that Libby Morrison's Rose on the South African Cast is simply astonishing. She is one of the all-time best recorded Rose's.

Am I the only person that finds the fact that a *South African original cast album of "Gypsy"* actually exists??

I read that if Lupone's Gypsy isn't recorded, for a small fee, she'll come over to your house and sing the score while Arthur tells you all about his wonderful production.

As previously mentioned, LuPone's Gypsy will get recorded. It's just a matter of the label.

However, I'm wondering if some of the tweaks that were instituted for City Center last summer will remain "tweaked". -I'm mainly referring to how Ms. LuPone "requested" and performed the half-note triplet figures in "Everything's Coming Up Roses". They were truncated to quarter-note triplet figures. In other words, she sang them twice as fast as they were originally written. I just have to wonder if the Styne estate fully approved that choice, and whether they would approve it for another recording. There were also a few other edits and rearrangements of the instrumental and dance music. -Oh, and the whole "Gypsy becomes a stripper" sequence too.

I don't get this. Is this funny? Why do you post stuff like this all the time? There's plenty of people I don't like on here... exactly once I've attacted them personally... I still regret it... does this poster rape puppies? What am I missing?
