re: Will You Be Happy If Kelli O'Hara Wins The Tony?

I would be happy if she won. I thought she was incredible. I saw Patti Lupone last summer in GYPSY and won't see her again until this summmer. So, I really can't compare the two performances at this time and won't be able to until after the Tonys are over.

re: Will You Be Happy If Kelli O'Hara Wins The Tony?

This reminds me of last season, when people tried to manufacture a "race" for the Tony between Audra McDonald and Christine Ebersole, when I don't think there was one. No one was going to beat Ebersole last year, just as no one is going to beat LuPone this year.

Prince will still be nominated, but will not win.

My predix:

LuPone
O'Hara
Russell
Prince
Butler

It would take a real "In The Heights" nominations sweep to push Gonzalez in and one of the others out. I doubt she will make the cut.

PJ, I'm totally down with them giving Patti a Nobel Prize.

re: Will You Be Happy If Kelli O'Hara Wins The Tony?

The thread isn't about who will win - it's about whether or not we would be okay if Ms. O'Hara won instead of Ms. LuPone.
Unlikely - yes, but this is a "what if" question. We're playing out an unlikely scenario for the sake of discussion.

I view the Tony awards in the same way i view the Superbowl. I would much rather see a game in which there is a close score and a major upset (NY Giants / Patriots), than see a completely predictable blow out where one team is assumed to win from the onset. In the case of football, I'm a Patriots fan but this year's superbowl was so exciting that ultimately I was happy for the Giants - they played a damn good game.
Likewise, I would be more than happy if Kelli landed the award. She is deserving as hell and quite an actress and singer. She also had the guts to re-work the character of Nellie as a more realistic individual. I would be very happy for her...I'd be shocked, though.

Yes! What would make it even better is if we saw Patti's reaction. It would be a historical first for The Tony folks to present a Tony for Best Actress at The Tonys. "And the winner is Patti LuPone!"

And later that night, riots will break out all over town. Patti's fans and shills will take to the streets and make Stonewall look like a picnic.

re: Will You Be Happy If Kelli O'Hara Wins The Tony?

Well, I wouldn't be angry, but I do hope Patti wins.

And A Director, it's not as if there were riots when Patti lost for SWEENEY TODD. I know you don't like her performance in GYPSY, but must you insult the woman on every thread? It makes you seem childish and frankly, like an ass.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

re: Will You Be Happy If Kelli O'Hara Wins The Tony?

I think Patti deserves it hands down, even more so than for Sweeney Todd or Anything Goes. Having said that . . . .

In 1960, everyone was assuming that it was Ethel Merman's for the taking (including me). It was a travesty when Mary Martin got it for Sound of Music (I still smart over it). But that's what happened, like it or not.

SOOOO, it's not totally out of the question for Kelli to get the award. I found her performance totally adequate, professionsl, etc., etc., but there wasn't the genius in it (which Mary Martin DID have in SP) that Patti puts into Momma Rose.

But I'm keeping the fingers crossed for Patti.

The tony is not Lupone's to lose get those thoghts out of your head, I rather see competition than just giving Lupone the award like they did for Ebersole. She may have not gotten the raves Patti got, but Kelli did get raves and there are other things than reviews that go into the Tonys. Is highly likely that Kelli O'Hara could and can take the Tony away from Lupone. Hell Yes!!!

re: Will You Be Happy If Kelli O'Hara Wins The Tony?

But it's NOT likely. Or at least not if the voters are paying attention.

Directly compare each of these two actresses and what they bring to the table in a performance of their respective shows. Ms. O'Hara is doing wonderful work, but it sure as hell isn't on the same level as Ms. LuPone's tour de force.

re: Will You Be Happy If Kelli O'Hara Wins The Tony?

Again...isn't the topic of this thread based rather heavily on the hypothetical that Ms. O'Hara ends up winning the award?
We all know that LuPone will probably win. The question is how will you feel if she doesn't.

I'm sorry if my comments aren't valid, jrb, but I sure thought they were. As you said, "The question is how will you feel if she doesn't." I stated earlier in the thread exactly how I would feel, but since this is a continuing conversation, I was expressing myself further on WHY I would feel that way in response to the new comments made by others.

Wasn't trying to throw it off. Sorry.

re: Will You Be Happy If Kelli O'Hara Wins The Tony?

"Kelli deserved the Tony for Clara in Piazza. Can we just retroactively give her one for that?"

Nope. Sorry.

Anyway, O'Hara really does not have a good chance. I think the only other person who might even get close is Jenna Russell.

re: Will You Be Happy If Kelli O'Hara Wins The Tony?

Frankly Patti deserves this Tony! In my opinion it would be wrong for them to give it to anyone else, in a leading role this season.

If Keli loses this tony she will be like the Kate Winslet of broadway. She is overdue .

So she should unjustifiably win the award over a more deserving performance this season? That would be inappropriate.

Ms. O'Hara is extremely talented and very young. I'm sure she'll have MANY further opportunities to win a Tony/Tonys.

re: Will You Be Happy If Kelli O'Hara Wins The Tony?

What i meant H.Higgins is that she is similar to Kate Winslet. There both brilliantly talented. They just havent found that role. They are overdue in the sense that they are both very talented at tony and oscar worthy.

re: Will You Be Happy If Kelli O'Hara Wins The Tony?

I believe that Kelli deserved 23948723942 Tonys for her work in The Light in the Piazza. However, in South Pacific, I feel that her voice is not properly showcased and if I was judged simply from that performance, I wouldn't necessarily call it Tony worthy (that's the writer's fault, not O'Hara's). I wouldn't be mad if she won, however, because I definitely believe that lady deserves a Tony.

I have to admit that I did not see Patti, but I definitely think Jenna deserves some attention for her work in Sunday in the Park With George. She made me cry and left a lasting impression on me.
