I just don't understand why it is so popular. I am not trying to bash it but i find the dialog kinda crappy, the music annoying, the lyrics campy.
I can relate to green chicks.

And you can also mourn the fact that in one or two hundred years our generation could be described just like that - crappy, annoying and campy.
I think the fact that the world, characters (for the most part) and part of the story is familiar is a drawing factor.
How many threads do we need like this?
B3T is correct. It's a familliar story with an added twist about being different, people eat that stuff up.
For people who do like Wicked (like me), it has very important messages, and is a very emotional show. Obviously, not everyone likes it, but a lot of people do. It is easy to relate to it; all the characters are extremely different, so there is something for everybody.
What you see in Bridge and Tunnel and your Sondheim musicals, others see in Wicked. Whether or not you want to believe it, Wicked has an awesome message, and a touching story. It will be around for awhile and you whining about it wont make it go away. Sorry!

I agree! Wicked is amazing.

In summary-
It's not exactly "Wicked" that people hate (although some do); it's the crazy fans associated with "Wicked."
Some people like it. Some don't. Same as everything in this life. It always makes me laugh when someone asks why someone likes a certain show. It's kind of inexplicable, yet obvious at the same time.

I agree! Most Americans are framiliar with The Wizard of Oz and there are a lot of people who love the movie. That attracts an audience for the show.
It's a good show, definitely not one of the best, but I think the hype surrounding it and some of the fans have played a big factor in people being close minded about it. That's just my two cents though.

Give it time. As people experience more and more shows their tastes become more discriminating. You'll reach a stage in life where you'll start tasting finer wines and it'll become hard for you to endure Ripple.
Wicked is a piece of theatrical fluff which has a huge fanbase. I saw the show when it opened in London and found it was missing something, but i couldnt put my finger on it. Then i read the book which was amazing and dark. Why the hell didnt they base the show on the book?
Many people think the book would not have translated on to the stage. I for one think thats rubbish, and the show couldnt have been so much better, but what do i know.

It's not everyone's "Cup of tea"...for example, I happen to think "A Chorus Line" (the revival) is the most overrated show I have heard about in the past few years. I wouldn't see it if you paid me to. Whereas I like "Wicked." But as SweetQ stated, it's the crazy fans who drive people up the wall.
I saw it. I liked it. It's what a lot of tourists want in a musical - a familiar storyline, flashy sets, catchy songs - basically a grand spectacle.
idina was really annoying but kristen should have won the tony
