Will the Baranski MAME be a "revisal"?

Posted: 3/1/05 at 7:38pmI sure hope they aren't planning any "politically correct" changes to the show. Or doing away with the overture. Or doing some kind of weird theme.

Posted: 3/1/05 at 11:16pmI'm sure Ito won't be as broad as he was in the original but I can't imagine any other changes being needed.

Posted: 3/1/05 at 11:21pmYeah, the character of Ito is the only real eyebrow-raising aspect of the show for a 2005 audience and they'll have to figure out how to make that something other than an ethnic stereotype for the revival.

Posted: 3/2/05 at 10:15amIs this coming to broadway after DC? I know Jerry Herman is reviving his big three. La Cage is first and Mame is second so hopefully Christine et al will come to broadway after.

Posted: 3/2/05 at 10:16amThat's a fabulous idea - except she would completely eclipse Baranski.

Actually Kathy Griffin would be a better Gooch if she could sing it, don't you think?
Or Judy Kaye for Vera?

I hope they don't change a thing. I think Baranski is great casting for MAME onstage(many folks see her as Vera simply because Vera is very close to the charachter Baranski played on the tv series, CYBIL.)................If history repeats itself, Nancy Opel would wind up playing Vera.......
Of course, FIDDLER's original Yente the Matchmaker was played by Bea Arthur who went from FIDDLER directly to her Tony winning performance as Vera in MAME.

Posted: 3/2/05 at 10:52amrath... how about Maureen McGovern?

Maureen for Vera? Perhaps - haven't seen her do a comic role though, barring her very small role in Airplane! which she played pretty straight...that's not who I'm thinking of, but I'll continue to wait and see if my idea comes up.
and WISH, the reason we see her as the character on Cybill is because that's the only character she ever plays.
Side note: I can't stop staring at my own avatar.

Rath, I have only seen Baranski in CHICAGO the film, an episode or two of CYBILL and the play RUMORS.
I am not a "great Baranski" fan as I am not familiar with most of her work. I did hear great things about her Mrs. Lovett when she did SWEENEY TODD.
Do you find her performances repetitive? I simply am not familiar with enough of them
Perhaps her MAME will give her a chance to "play" very differently.
I would love to see Michelle Lee as MAME. I believe she did it in concert recently. Heck, I would love to see Michelle Lee back on Broadway in a musical.
I looooove the fact that Elaine Stritch had discussions with Judy Garland(when MAME opened on Broadway it was widely thought that Garland would star in the film version)and the producers of MAME about "the two of them" replacing Angela Lansbury on Broadway in the original production of MAME. Stritch said that Judy of course would star as Mame and Elaine would be Vera. HOwever, Stritch told Garland that they could work it out so that when "Garland wasn't feeling up to it," they could switch roles and Stritch would be MAME and Garland would be Vera. That would have been remarkable.

Posted: 3/2/05 at 12:17pmI've seen her onstage, on film, and on television, and can't say I've ever seen one slight deviation from that one character. I'm bored with it now.

Maybe this is totally out of left field, but what about Kirstie Allie for Vera? I've always thought she was a great actress, and I think this would allow her the opportunity for a great success(possibly a Tony). And if Fat Actress is still on the air, it would afford the show new locale, etc.
I know she prob'ly can't sing, but I think she screams Vera and could pull it off.

Posted: 3/2/05 at 12:29pmhow was Christine Baranski in Nick & Nora? Anyone see her in it?
#23re: Will the Baranski MAME be a 'revisal'?
Posted: 3/2/05 at 12:29pmI saw it. She was the same in that as in everything else.
