Where in NYC / Times Square do you get your cast recordings for shows (without shelling out the big bucks at the theatre)? Too bad Virgin is gone...

Do you really think Virgin was the only store that sold CD's in New York?

Colony is overpriced, but it's in the theater district. The Drama Book Shop also sometimes has cast albums, as do the Broadway New York/Theatre Circle stores. Otherwise there are several Barnes and Noble locations with music sections, though the one with the best theater selection in books and movies/music is closing soon (Lincoln Center).

The internet. Amazon, normally. They're always having promotions for free shipping.

REALLY?! I must be the only one who would fly to NYC all the way from California and go straight to Virgin to buy all my cast recordings. It's special-er that way.

So ever since it closed, I have not bought a thing. Without Virgin Megastore, where do we get our cast recordings?

Itunes. I'm not too set on having the actual CD and packaging and all. Occasionally I buy one at Colony, and after that I go off in search of someone willing to buy a kidney.

^ I usually do Itunes too. You can get it at midnight on the release day too which is nice.

Amazon.com is the best. But I, too, tend to just get my cast recordings from iTunes.

The internet. It gives me something to do during my refractory period.

Used to Love going through the clearance bins and waiting for sales at Tower Records to buy C.D.'s. Those days are gone.

I then went to Virgin... sometimes to get cast c.ds. Those days are gone.

I do all my shopping with Mary and Ethel on Amazon now.

If you want to get ripped off at the theater you might as well get ripped off @ colony. $ 5 is a bit much for a small bottle of water at the theater.

The OP might be younger than the requisite age to have a debit or credit card and needs recommendations for places that take cash and have a selection.

While I admit that Colony is a bit overpriced. I've found a few fun gems from the West End there that I hadn't seen elsewhere. I may not buy there very often, but I always feel the need to go in and see if there's anything new that jumps of the shelves for me.

Other than that, Thank god for Amazon.com.

Back in the day, Colony was MAYBE an ok place to find a rare UK import. Now, just go to Amazon and pay half the price. There's no excuse for anyone at anytime buying anything at that store. How they've stayed in business all these years really boggles my mind.

I completely agree, and I wonder the same thing. The prices there are so high it's actually laughable.

I get the whole "I'm in New York, I want to buy these cast recordings IN NEW YORK". I get it, I used to be the same way, even if it meant buying them for a few dollars more at the theater just so I could say I got them there. But even at Theater Circle and stores like that where single CD's are $22.50 and double CD's are $40, people have to be INSANE to buy them.

Take cash. Go to grocery store, drug store, gas station, Target, Walmart, etc. Buy Visa/MasterCard/AmEx
gift card to use for online shopping. Don't complain about the gift card fee because it's still cheaper than the ridiculous mark-up at Virgin Megastore was.
