Sorry if this is old news...I know IMDb isn't always the most reliable news source...just thought I'd share

That's probably for the best.
So what's Sierra Boggess up to after Mermaid anyway?

It seems that, in IMDB's eyes, the fact that Mary Jane is listed on the casting breakdown is Julie Taymor's "dismissal" of the rumors that Evan Rachel Wood is attached to the show.
I'd take this report with a grain of salt.

Rumors? Wood and Taymor both confirmed it themselves.
But who knows - I'd rather see an unknown in the role.

Posted: 4/4/09 at 8:09amI'm glad but not at the same time. I was looking forward to seeing a mainly film actress challenge herself and do Broadway.

Posted: 4/4/09 at 6:25pmThe casting notice does say they're looking for understudies too, so it's possible ERW is still attatched.

Posted: 4/5/09 at 12:38amWith the kind of money attached to this project I would be willing to bet an equal amount that it will not be an unknown/undiscovered talent in any of the lead roles. It may not end up being Evan Rachel Wood, but it will be some other star with name recognition.

Has anyone attended a past Spidey audition? Specifically for Mary Jane? I never auditioned...thought Wood was a done deal and major B-way actress lined up in wings....I can't figure out if these searches are for hype only....

Check this out.... answered my own question about the legitimacy of the nationwide open call search....
http://theatrenorthcarolina.typepad.com/theatre_north_carolina/broadway/ (the you tube clip is only weeks old)
The IMBD says Taymor dismissed rumours by releasing a casting notice for Peter/Mary Jane/Female Villiam. That's not the same as Taymor saying Mary Jane role has not already been offered and/or accepted by Wood. According to IMBD, it "appeared" that the leads were not cast, Taymore never made a statement to that effect.
I'm thinking out loud here....this is one of the largest productions to come out on b-way in years. However, just months before opening, Taymor decides to go from a huge ticket like Wood to a totally unseasoned actress? And better yet, the 3 big leads are ALL open now and being cast with unknown actors. Not to mention that these 3 unknown actors will be supported by a fully cast ensemble made up of veteran equity stage performers.
If all Taymor's stars actually have backed out on her, why not an equity/agent search for comparable named talent? Maybe one no-name...but all three?
Possibly agent calls are happening in the same locations while Telsey is hosting the open calls...that would make 100% sense... then Telsey can say the actors were found in the search in that city and we would all believe that they walked off the street during the open call! And think of all the free press in those major markets they will be getting by promoting the "Are You the Next Spiderman" thng... interesting that the casting tour ends right before pre-sale tickets begin.
We all love the underdog, but in reality who in their right mind would allow a line-up of complete unknowns to open a multi-million dollar production in the middle of a recession?
As one of the "unknowns" outside of a casting city, I think I'll save my airfare till I hear they are recasting for ensemble. That seems a more likely place to start.

According to Newsweek she is officially in the show:
"7 Things About Evan Rachel Wood
6. Those pipes will come in handy next year when she stars in the Julie Taymor Broadway production of Spider-Man. "It's been my dream for as long as I can remember to do Broadway. I sang on Once and Again, and I sang in Across the Universe. I grew up in musical theater. You've never seen a Spider-Man like this. It's going to be like a rock-and-roll circus show, and U2 is going to be doing the music."

#19re: Wood NOT attached to Spider-man
Posted: 6/21/09 at 12:22amI'd like it see to a deserving unknown who actually wants the role. Since it's obviously going to be a very demanding one.

Posted: 6/21/09 at 12:25amEvan Rachel Wood is a very strong and credible actress since her debut in 13. I am unsure how or where she got vilified. I know Perez Hilton has it out for her, but I was unaware so many others did. Hers are the best tracks on the Across The Universe CD.
#21re: Wood NOT attached to Spider-man
Posted: 6/21/09 at 12:32amJust to clarify, I was talking about Jim Sturgess. I agree that Evan Rachel Wood is a talent and I think she definitely transcends the quality of Across The Universe as a movie and an album.

Posted: 6/26/09 at 1:16amEvan Rachel Wood was just on Jimmy Fallon and they talked about how she IS attached to Spider-man the musical.
#23re: Wood NOT attached to Spider-man
Posted: 6/26/09 at 8:51amShe also talked about it on The View yesterday.
#24re: Wood NOT attached to Spider-man
