Awesome! When are you coming?
Hopefully I can get to LA to see this.

Just FYI, I got confirmation that all the weekday matinees are indeed pre-sold shows (and not open to the public), and that also applies to house seats.
You can check the website for a list of all the public performances.

Are you guys recording this? I love Groovelily's music, and wish that I wasn't on the other side of the country.

Hi, iluvtheatertrash: I really don't know if there's a recording planned at this point, but if I hear anything I'll let you know.
There are a few song clips (from the demo - so it's Val and Brendan singing) on the Center Theatre Group website.

Dear Erika,
Actually, If found myself staring at the ad for SBW in the "Whose's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" program for about 20 minutes. Suddenly, I realized I REALLY WANT to see the show.
So, I'm getting my student funds together and driving to downtown. (I'm 45 minutes away).
I don't know when, but I will be there. I look forward to your performance, Erika!
Best of Luck!

Today in the LA Times Calendar Section:
Poetry in the hands, wating to be shared. Deaf West Theater Mounts its first original production "Sleeping Beauty Wakes."
"Put your hands down. Thumbs up, don't curve your fingers. And do 'happy' from your elbows, not your wrists .... "
At the Kirk Douglas Theatre, American Sign Language expert Elizabeth Greene is coaching hearing actors Kevin Earley and Erika Amato through the intricacies of a sing-and-sign song during a rehearsal of "Sleeping Beauty Wakes," the new musical being mounted by Deaf West Theatre.
A little later, running through another song, Earley flubs it. Deaf actor Troy Kotsur signs good-humored sarcasm. Earley breaks up. Then Kotsur, who relies on visual cues and counting to match the music he can't hear, is out of sync.
Deaf West's audacious "deaf musical" approach has been seasoned through revivals of "Oliver!" and the Tony-honored "Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." The latter went from its beginnings in 2001 at the company's sub-99-seat theater in North Hollywood to the Mark Taper Forum to Broadway and beyond.
But "Sleeping Beauty Wakes" — a modern twist on the fairy tale by songwriters Brendan Milburn and Valerie Vigoda of the indie rock band GrooveLily and librettist Rachel Sheinkin ("The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee") — is Deaf West's first original musical.
Sleeping Beauty Wakes
Awesome! Awesome!!!
Funny, someone was just raving to me about this production today. I was on the fence, but now I'm definitely gonna go. Excited.
i just got back from seeing it and need to collect my thoughts before expounding. Suffice to say, there's alot to tell but it is all good!
Sleeping Beauty Wakes is unique, endearing, enjoyable, sweet, funny, touching and nutty. A real breath of fresh air. More later, but Miss E, you were fierce tonight. What a voice! I'm so glad to finally meet you and ever so glad to know you.
Get thee to the Kirk Douglas Theater!
Anyone else seen it yet?

Yay!
I didn't even know about the article until I saw it at the theater tonight. Fortunately, a bunch of people clued in my hubby, and he went out and bought me a copy.
I'm posting the pics from the article now... Here's one:

Oh, and hi, singingbackup! I'm so glad you enjoyed the show, and it was great meeting you. (I look forward to your "expounding.")
Here's photo #2.
Great to meet you too..."expounding" later today!
PS..The Groudskeeper guy....super cute! (in second picture)
It was so nice to meet you Erika last night! I enjoyed the show and wish I could see it again. All deaf actors were great and it's so fun to watch their signing and facial amazing expression, and as I said to you, your singing for the bad witch was fantastic (and Deanne's facial expression was priceless in both songs)!
I know you guys are still tweaking every day, and I hope you can settle down and enjoy the awesome experience. Oh, keep posting more pic please!
Break a leg tonight Miss E....I can't wait to go back and see it again. Curious about the tweaks.
The music is beautiful, interesting, often very moving, coupled with the mesmerizing expressiveness of sign language, it's such an engaging, engrossing experience. Some of the storytelling is a bit confusing (for me at least) but the talented cast, both singing and signing offer up a unique take on a classic story. All in all....Magical.
And side note, some wonderfully talented West Coast performers, Broadway (and beyond) caliber. Especially Kevin Earley and our very own Erika Amato.
Here's to a successful run!
I look forward to reading the review in the LA Times.
And, seeing it on the 22nd!

Just got up after the most ackward triple bill (Sleeping Beauty Wakes, and a midnight showing of Grindhouse @ the Chinese Theater... don't ask), but I do have to say, Sleeping Beauty Wakes is a whole lot of fun! I sat down seconds before curtain in a really bad headspace, and was instantly taken to a heartfilled, inventive, musical space, which tugged on the heartstrings without being to sacchrine, and still had a lot of wacky humor!
Get your tickets NOW before they're sold out (which will most certainly be the case)!
Erika---I didn't realize you were in this, then I read the Playbill.com article and said "Erika Amato...I know that name!"
Congrats...it sounds great :)
Shame it just wasn't "Grind"...whatever DID happen to that show.
And now, back to our thread. Great show, go see it, Erika rocks, blah blah blah
