Both Princes from Into the Woods.
Well technically they are decent boyfriends, just terrible husbands.

Benjamin Barker in SWEENEY TODD
I think Benjamin Barker was probably a sweet boyfriend and husband. Lucy turned down the rich Judge Turpin to stay with him; he had to have something going for him.
The Sweeney Todd alter ego probably would have made a terrible boyfriend, but he didn't really date.

I'd say Benjamin Barker/Sweeney Todd is a "good" husband. We never really know Benjamin Barker, but Sweeney is pretty bent on wreaking havoc on those that wronged him and presumably drove his wife to suicide. In fact, the revelation that Lucy had killed herself (although a lie) is what drives him to revenge. Hell, it seems like the only thing that kept him going while imprisoned is that his wife and daughter were at home waiting for him.
A homicidal maniac, sure. But bad spouse? Not really.

"George from SITPWG? Are you kidding?"
George and Dot's relationship is obviously very strained...he didn't take her to the FOLLIES!!111..and he bitterly paints over her painting she wanted. And has no interest seeing his child and says Louis is the father now. I think that's a pretty bad boyfriend. If he could stop finishing that damn hat and give her more attention, he'd be better. The show would be a lot shorter though :P.
And consider the other lyrics that can be quoted:
[[Dot]]
Yes, George, run to your work.
Hide behind your painting.
I have come to tell you I am leaving because I thought you might
care to know-foolish of me, because you care about nothing-
[[George]]
I care about many things-
[[Dot]]
Things-not people.
[[George]]
People, too. I cannot divide my feelings up as neatly as you,
and I am not hiding behind my canvas-I am living in it.
[[Dot]]
What you care for is yourself.
[[George]]
I care for this painting. You will be in this painting.
[[Dot]]
I am something you can use.
[[George]]
I had thought you understood.
[[Dot]]
It's because I understand that I left,
That I am leaving.
[[George]]
Then there's nothing I can say,
Is there?
[[Dot]]
Yes. George, there is:
You could tell me not to go.
Say it to me.
Tell me not to go.
Tall me that you're hurt,
Tell me you're relieved,
Tell me that you're bored-
Anything, but don't assume I know.
Tell me what you feel!
[[George]]
What I feel?
You know exactly how I feel.
Why do you insist
You must hear the words,
When you know I cannot give you words?
Not the ones you need.
There's nothing to say.
I cannot be what you want.
[[Dot]]
What do you want, George?
[[George]]
I needed you and you left.
[[Dot]]
There was no room for me-
[[George]]
You will not accept who I am.
I am what I do-
Which you knew,
Which you always knew,
Which I thought you were a part of!
[[Dot]]
No,
You are complete, George,
You are your own.
We do not belong together.
You are complete, George,
You all alone.
I am unfinished,
I am diminished
With or without you.
We do not belong together,
And we should have belonged together.
What made it so right together
Is what made it all wrong.
No one is you, George.
There you agree,
But others will do, George.
No one is you and
No one can be,
But no one is me, George,
No one is me.
We do not belong together.
And we'll never belong-!
You have a mission,
A mission to see.
Now I have one too, George.
And we should have belonged together.
I have to move on.

I would HATE George to be my boyfriend.

Agreed.. Dot may love him forever and always, but it's not really a happy relationship.

Dot wanted immortality, not fidelity or attentiveness. She's front and center in a masterpiece.

This just doesn't make sense..."Finishing the hat" becomes completely pointless if Dot is satisfied with George. I just don't understand, the tension between Dot/George is so blatantly obvious....

"He is an ex-boyfriend but Zack [sic], A Chorus Line"
I dunno - she moved out on him without even saying anything. As he puts it: "I came home one night and you were gone" - and he gave her the job, didn't he? :)
Fred Casely from Chicago. He definitely had it coming.

Billy from Carousel
Also Melchior from Spring Awakening was pretty bad because he pressures Wendla and beats her (even if she asks for it it's still wrong.)
And (SPOILER) in the play the sex is clearly non-consenual

I love how this thread has way more traffic than the "best boyfriends" thread.

Eh... not really. If she asks, it's consensual. And kinky. It's not like he's doing it out of anger or malice.

I don't think of George in SITPWG as a "bad" boyfriend. Dot was expecting something from him that he couldn't give her. And she was infatuated not with the man but with his work. She wanted him but what she loved about him was the very thing that competed for his attention. So if she was unhappy, it was because they were a bad fit.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

LAWLZ at James Barbour...
Radames from AIDA... in terms of his relationship with Amneris, especially. I know the dude was obligated to be engaged to her, but he could have been a little kinder?
Okay, Alex from Aspects of Love was the worst boyfriend of all time in every possible way. But he's so darn charming, he can get away with shooting one girlfriend, then falling for her teenage daughter.

My bad on saying 'Benjamin Barker'
I wasn't thinking of him as a bad HUSBAND for Lucy, I was thinking of him as a bad BOYFRIEND for Mrs Lovett
So I guess I should have said 'Sweeney Todd', huh?
And I love the observation that it's SO much easier to come up with WORST Boyfriends than BEST ones
I guess that what makes great drama. To paraphrase another post here, if they were all GOOD boyfriends / spouses, the shows would be a lot shorter...
And I'm loving all the character discussions -- that's why I love this board

I gave that one a dozen posts up, but Casely is a bad enough boyfriend that it bears repeating
Frank N Furter's a good one, though. He dumps Columbia for Eddie, then kills Eddie.
