Les Mis has got a great opening, I agree. It was the first Broadway show I saw and I was totally hooked from that first note.

POSSIBLE SPOILER!!! "Curtains"
The opening number in Curtains is supposed to be deliberately bad - or this is the way it was in LA. An interesting and not entirely successful choice.

Mallardo, I agree. It was hysterical, and not even all that bad. The ensemble is great, and it's simply Jessica who screws it all up, to hilarious effect.

i was just about to add the opening of Spamalot too.
and as much as I love Jersey Boys, Im not sure thats the best way to open the show. I bet a lot of people sit there wondering why they dont understand what the actors are saying before theyre told its not english.

they probably don't come worse than that:
"a place I am proud to call mine"
from the bad London musical "La Cava"

For me "The Producers" opening number has always been a problem, the Opening Night thing. It's tacky and not particularly funny. The show doesn't get started until Bloom arrives at the office.

Well, I love Carrie, but it opened in a HS girl's locker room with Carrie freaking over getting her period(in song no less). Then Darlene Love came out and sang, after which she broke character and 4th wall to bask in the audience's applause.
....but the world goes 'round

Well that sounds amazing.
I think one of the worst of the recent batch of musicals is "Mamma Who Bore Me." It's just a boring song to open an exciting show.

Actually tazber, you are wrong, "Carrie" opens on the gym itself, with them singing about how it's hard to fit "In" to the pressures of High School, and then Darlene Love sings more gym like instructions at them, and then after Carrie ruins the pyramid they go to the locker room.

I'm not a big fan of Opening Night for The Producers, it just feels bland and not as funny as it could be.
I'm divided for Ces Soirees La in Jersey Boys because it's a great way to open to show the impact that The Four Seasons had, but then for any new people in the audience they would probably get confused about the song. They would think it's Oh What A Night and then hearing it in French would make them think "Am I In The Right Place?"

Deena, I'm curious, are you talking about the opening number on Broadway or on tour? I like the one on Broadway, but am not a fan (at all) of the opening number that they use on tour.
I agree with THE PRODUCERS' opening number being a problem. It's very bland and does a terrible job of setting a tone for the show.

Dirty, I was referring to the Bway version. I haven't seen the tour.

Thanks for clearing that up. I just wasn't sure which one you were referring to because I know a lot of people don't like the one on tour.

Best: Urinetown
Worst: The Producers
I would say Jekyll and Hyde, but only the Broadway version. The original opening, "I Need to Know", was quite exciting.

Into the Woods has a great opening. The Full Monty wasn't bad either.
I don't know what to say about a bad opening...maybe 1776
