I actually felt liek Christian Hoff's seemed a little affected, to me, JLY's seemed more genuine. But, I realize things can come off as fake when they're not, so I don't know if I should be talking...typing.
I thought Julia's was very gracious and fine.
And, well, I can't criticize Beth since I have a hetero-crush on her. That was not really her real voice, because I heard an interview with her, and she sounded different. So, she was having a little fun wtih it, I don't see a problem. It was out there, but still genuine I thought.
Christian was in state of shock...he is so cute, he was really overwhelmed.
Once again, the level of maturity and compassion of people here absolutely astounds me. (And not in a good way.)

Once again, I'm left startled at the self-righteous poster pointing out what horrible people we are and how our behavior sucks. Please just go away, I am equally astounded at how nitpicky you can be over an internet messageboard that you claimed to leave a while back.
???
As bad as some of them can be, I'd take the wit and heart of the majority of the acceptance speeches every year at the Tony's over those of the Grammy's or Oscars any day.

LaChanze. I was pretty turned off by the Oprah love at the end too. She's not the show's only producer. Whoever it was that said the show might not have been on Broadway without Oprah has forgotten that the show was in rehearsals when Oprah came on board. Blech. Overall I wish more winners had acknowledged their fellow cast members. Shame, shame.
eslgr8, I agree. As much as I love this site and chatting on message boards, people can be so mean and rude about stuff. I've been hurt by what people say about shows I love, but they have an opinion to post, but it's sad when they are so rude just by swearing, etc.
Anyway, back to topic...I liked Christian's speech and I think for the most part LaChanze was good, but doesn't she have a second husband? She didn't thank him which I thought was kind of odd cause at the last part I thought she say something about him, but instead it was Oprah.
I'm sure alot of you, including myself, would be praising the Tony's if the broadway show that YOU loved won Tony awards.
LACHANZE.
What was that? Big no-no.
Ending a thank you speech with "Thank you, Oprah!" at the Tonys is like vomitting on your grandmother's lap.

LaChanze and JLY just had me kind of uncomfortable watching them, except the sheer look of deserved happiness that wouldn't come off of her was infectious. I was so thrilled for her winning this, it was a dream for that woman and I'm so happy for her. JLY though seemed like he wasn't giving an acceptance speech at the Tony awards.
A lot of others were just plain mediocre, but I also loved Christian's so heartfelt and spot on with the moment that none of us seemed to expect.

Thank you, KuhnCrazy, Oprah didn't come in to produce The Color Purple till the show had already had its workshops and out-of-town productions, they had announced a Broadway engagement and the cast, everything was set up. Perhaps the show wouldn't be such a hit without Oprah's support, but singling out Oprah out of all the producers seemed like LaChanze was sucking up to her, perhaps they are good friends and she was well-intentioned but it certainly seemed annoying to me.
I really don't understand what people are talking about? was there a deleted post? I said before: "LaChanze had to thank Oprah, maybe the show wouldn't be on Broadway today w/o Oprah's promotions and support. She didn't get paid to do that. She gets paid for her work. And I bet she makes enough"
I am aware of the show existing before Oprah put just a million out of the 13 million dollar production(i think it was 13), but i think the show wouldn't have been as successful without all the attention that it got because of Oprah's support and promotion. I like this show, just don't think it would have made it w/o her.
C is for company: who are you talking about when you said this: "Once again, I'm left startled at the self-righteous poster pointing out what horrible people we are and how our behavior sucks. Please just go away, I am equally astounded at how nitpicky you can be over an internet messageboard that you claimed to leave a while back". ????

..theres an eslgr8 post right above it which I actually referenced in my post by using the same transitive verb he used. It was not in reference to the post I believe you had above that which I agreed with, Christian had the best speech of the evening and the genuine shock was a redeeming quality to the mostly bland night
I just didn't know what you were talking about or to whom. Thanks for clearing that up.

No troubles, I have no problem clearing up any unclear things I say
JLY's speech really sounded fake but I can't blame him. He probably was very nervous and he ended up looking robotic in his thanks.
I can't comment on LaChanze because I too was really bummed that she won. I thought they'd have a chance with the featured actresses but I never thought she could beat Chita, Patti or even Sutton. I blanked out most of what she said. I don't think she was 'paid' to thank Oprah though... lol..; can you imagine it? "We bought your win so it's in the bag and here's another fifty bucks to thank the big O"? nah... sounds stupid even for Oprah.
Julia was well... Julia in all her glory. I thought her comment was a little snarky. If she had showed up on the red carpet like all the presenters and actors... MAYBE there wouldn't have been this 'oh well... I'm way more famous than you but YOU are so talented I can't get a nomination... must suck, uh?' color to the thing for me but I don't know.
She just HAD to say something. She couldn't do her stuff like the other presenters, she HAD to try and be special. poor Julia.
Prince sounded like a jerk. I don't know if he was offended he got the lifetime award like he wasn't going to do anything more or what but his speech was cold!
I was just re-watching the Awards, and Julia sounded like a teenage fan when she said "People are really talented, people" or something like that. I still think it was very graceful of hers to come to the ceremony. Even if she didn't do red carpet or whatever. LaChanze was so happy. She really deserved the Award. Her speech came from the heart and she said she couldn't be there, without the work of all the other cast members. I thought it was one of the most amazing Tony Awards ceremonies. Stars shined brighter than ever. And what a finale, with the Queen, Julie Andrews presenting the last award. Julie is a delight. She is the queen of musical theatre. I think only her and Liza are the queens, and both were included in the Tony Awards. A great ending. A fabulous ceremony.
I'm just wondering...
too all those people that think that Oprah had a huge influence last night & LaChanze didn't deserve to win and say it was Oprah's "fault". Do you have proof of this or are you just upset that your favorite didn't win?
They are just upset. If Oprah had such a big influence, her musical would have won.
John Lloyd Young's speech got me depressed and seemed like a funeral speech. I did not like it at all...It is a tony award, not a death sentance!
I thought JLY's speech was horrendous... he thanked no one for this opportunity he was given for a broadway debut, although people continually laud him for being so "humble," and he turns a potentially inspirational moment into this schmaltzy, pre-rehearsed love fest for himself.
Might I add that Christian Hoff's speech frightened me more than anything else, he must have referenced God 17 times, and the baby comment...
and he didn't even kiss or thank his "casting aent" "girlfriend".
I thought Christian Hoff came off REALLY sincere. And it was a touching moment.
Young just wasn't the same. It looked he was ripping off Hoff's speech.
