I agree with most, but haven't seen Rent.
Paint Your Wagon is horrible..they changed the whole story.
Guys and Dolls did the same..hated it.
Annie..awful
South Pacific (tv version) was just horrendous. Glenn Close should be barred from the rights to any musicals..
South Pacific, the original movie, I don't mind except for the stupid color filters
A Chorus Line is dreadful
Godspell, yuck
JC Superstar, yuck
Phantom of the opera. The worst..How could they possibly think it was a good idea to cast a Phantom who couldn't sing? It was PAINFUL! My son couldn't even sit through it and he loves the show. I wanted ear plugs.
The Producers was terrible in a word!
Rent was good and you know it!

"The Producers -- did you laugh even once?"
YES....ALL THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE MOVIE, AS A MATTER OF FACT, AND I SAW IT FIVE TIMES AND LAUGHED JUST AS HARD EACH TIME. AND NOW I HAVE THE DVD.
THE PRODUCERS movie was not perfect. There were definitely mistakes made in the planning/producing/directing/marketing. However, the jokes were still hysterical, the actors were still amazing, and Uma Thurman was fantastic. She is beautiful and her acting was great. That character is supposed to not be a great singer/dancer. Everybody associated with Springtime for Hitler is supposed to be lacking in talent, so Uma's inability to be Ginger Rogers shouldn't be a problem. She was a very good choice for that role. I admire her for believing in herself enough to take this on.
As for the stage musicals that didn't translate well to film: My greatest disappointment was PHANTOM. Gerard Butler was absolutely the poorest choice for the lead role. He's probably a very talented actor, but not for this role. I know the brainy-brain scheme behind casting him was that his voice was supposed to have a rock music "edge," but it didn't work for me. And furthermore, there has to be a major star in this role. Every actor in this role has always had a great singing voice, and they should have stuck with someone in that league. PHANTOM has always been owned by Michael Crawford, no matter how excellent the actors who followed him, especially the fantastic Howard McGillen. I cannot judge whether Michael Crawford was too old or too overweight for the screen version in 2005, but it should have been done in 1995. If they can pull together crappy movies like AEON FLUX in Hollywood, why couldn't they pull PHANTOM together in 1995?
I haven't seen many movie musicals. but I think Annie's was horrible. Adding the new songs, particularily replacing NYC, was pointless, and if they HAD to add new songs, couldn't they at least have been good. I also really didn't like Carol Burnett as Miss Hannigan. Add all that, with Punjab and the helicopter chase, it was a pretty bad movie musical.

Great question. Quite a few were disasters on film. I think the worst was "Damn Yankees" with Tab Hunter and Ray Walston. It was awful. My friend says the film version of "Oklahoma" was the worst. Some say "Hello Dolly", because Streisand was miscast.I felt that Natalie Wood ruined "West Side Story". On the other hand, several films I found to be better than the Broadway production,"Chicago", "Carousel" and "Oliver" were better on film.
