I can agree that GUYS AND DOLLS stinks as a film.

In 1974, there were more glasses sold to people than any other year in history. When researchers began a study of why so many people thought they needed glasses, the one common element among people is that they had all seen the movie "Mame" and thought they needed glasses due to "Lucille Ball looking a bit fuzzy".
You may have to hunt for it, but there is a film version of "The Song of Norway" that was made in the 60's starring Florence Henderson that is SOOOOOooooo bad that it is good.
I saw SONG OF NORWAY, in a movie theater that was just about empty. It looked beautiful, but it was dull, beyond belief. I'd love to see it, again.
As far as movies that I felt bastardized the stage version, Annie and A Chorus Line. The helicopter chase was just one of the many things wrong with Annie, and don't even get me started on giving "What I Did for Love" to Cassie as a romantic song. They completely missed the boat. Phantom of the Opera was bad, but I think if they actually had a talented cast, it would've been better. Moulin Rouge just gives me a headache.
And I liked Summer Stock. If you want a really bad Gene Kelly/Judy Garland movie musical, just see The Pirate. The only good things about that movie are The Pirate Ballet and "Be A Clown."
the WORST movie musical is hands down:
**drumroll**
TOMMY
Love the music but God, that horrendous.

Summer Stock was not a Broadway musical. It was a movie musical about putting on a show in a barn and hoping to get it produced on Broadway.
Gotta say, I loved the Producers. It was a really fun movie, and I liked Uma, although I have a biased opinion since i'm a huge fan of hers.
As for the worst, for the movie musical I have seen, it has to be RENT. Sorry, but I just hated everything about that movie.

Unlike a lot of people, I had no problem with Annie (although I was a kid who had not seen the stage show at the time), The Producers (no where near as good as the stage version, but still fun), and Phantom (the leads lacked the vocal range of the stage stars, but the film was beautiful and for a change it actually got some sexual chemistry off of the leads).
I have to agree with all of the following:
Man of La Mancha - Excruciating.
Camelot - A big lumbering disappointment.
Mame - Totally lifeless.
Goodbye, Mr. Chips - Apparently Peter O'Toole torturing us by singing in Man of La Mancha was not enough (or vice versa).
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum - Am I the only one that finds Zero Mostel like fingernails down a chalk board in this particular film?
A Chorus Line - Utterly irredeemable. I have never seen the play, but if it is anything like the movie it has effectively scared me away from the forthcoming revival. And what the hell is Michael Douglas doing in a musical? It certainly wasn't acting!

I didn't like the film version of Chicago. Too many cut songs, too many roles mis-cast, no one really danced.

I was thinking about that chocolate tv the other day.

There is no way in HELL, or in any alternate universe, that the Chicago film is even CLOSE to being one of the WORST movie musicals ever.

Some of the worst:
Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
Man of La Mancha
A Chorus Line
Godspell
The Unsinkable Molly Brown
How can anyone say "that Village People movie"? It was the bestest ever!
i have to say how much i HATE Moulin Rouge.
i also hated The Wiz. i'll agree that A Chorus Line is horrible but i grew up with it so i have a weird little place in my heart for it even tho i shouldn't i know...
let us not forget Grease 2 though!
(*side point*) how could you say you hated Godspell!!!! OMG THAT MOVIE IS FABULOUS!

In my book, "Man of La Mancha" takes the cake. Could that girl playing Aldonza even sing? It also made the play seem boring. I've been in the play before. I have a soft spot for that play. It is not boring.
"Goodbye Mr. Chips" probably stinks, too. I've never seen it, though.
Actually, I refuse to see the 1939 movie, truth be told. How *dare* they give that Oscar to Robert Donat instead of Clark Gable?

I think Moulin Rouge is brilliant. I like Summer Stock too. Of course neither derived from a stage show.
That being said the worst movie musical is my mind is Chorus Line. Among the crop of newer movie musicals, The Phantom of the Opera is at the top of the worst.
And I don't really like any Rodgers and Hammerstein movie musicals except for The Sound of Music.
The newest Once Upon a Mattress. *cringe*
I didn't like the Fiddler movie either, although I don't really like Fiddler. period.

the newest Once Upon a Mattress, it sucks, i loved Rent and i thought Phantom was pretty good, i liked The Producers but it could have been a little better, A Chours Line is pretty bad, i hated the Fidler movie it made me not like Filder that much, i have to say i loved Annie, i watched it all the time as a kid so i can't say anything about that, but Camelot was pretty bad to.
"TOMMY Love the music but God, that horrendous."
I loved Tommy. I thought Ann-Margret was great in that.I use to watch that movie all the time.

I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but it makes me sad to see Fiddler on the Roof on here. Different tastes I guess, but I think it's actually one of the best movie musicals.
That being said, I think The Phantom of the Opera was absolutely rancid. And I completely forgot about The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Perhaps it's not the worst, but my mother used to have an inexplicable fondness for this movie, and I remember miserably sitting through it several times as a kid.
ok who ever said rent producers phantom guys and dolls and west side story must be drunk or 12
them movies served the shows well(i thought rent was great and looked amazing as did phantom and i hate that show)
and west side story ,guys and dolls are bloody classics

jesus christ 70s reject superstar are painfull
As much as I hated Phantom (who told Gerard Butler he could sing??) and Rent (who told Chris Columbus he could direct?) hands down, the worst movie musical ever made was probably A Chourus Line. You have to be kidding me with "What I Did For Love".
I hated Annie, but I hated the show as well, so I guess that was a given.
