Rent--that scene where Mimi comes back to life just made us laugh and "A Chorus LIne" I love after Paul's big emotional speech Michael Douglas says "Get a hat."
Phantom: get rid of Emmy, Gerry, and Joel(Tim Burton or Baz Luhrmann would have been soooo much better), fix the difiguration and scrap the swordfight and you got yourself a good film!
RENT: After watching it three times I got annoyed with everyone on screen. And I dislike Rosario with a PASSION.
Pippin: After it was done I was like "WTF was that sh*t?!"
My top two would be 'Mame' and 'A Chorus Line'. 'Mame' should be tried again with a different lead, and 'A Chorus Line' should be left as a stage piece.
I HATED that new Once a Upon a Mattress. What a waste. The cinematography (or lack thereof) is hideous. So many high schools put on cheaper (but better) production yearly of that show. I'm not really sure why Producers didn't work for me. Though I must say it is probably the most faithful stage-to-film transfers yet.
I really think we have some good films to look forward to. I saw about twenty minutes from Dreamgirls and it is incredible. It is the perfect material to make the leap. Also Hairspray seems like it will be an instant classic. I really hope "Into the Woods" gets done soon. Maybe Dreamworks could make this happen. I heard a long time ago Speilberg was involved. Who knows..
Being a faithful translation of a stage show to the screen, is not always a good thing. What has to be kept in mind is the difference in medium. And, there is a big, big difference. My biggest issue with MY FAIR LADY, is that it never comes off like a movie. It's just so stagnant. It had more life on stage. Also, some scenes are incidental, and written just because time is need to prepare for another scene on stage. These types of scene may not be needed in a film, and most likely should be eliminated.

Totally forgot about the TV versions of musicals. With that in mind, I have to agree that the ABC versions of Bye Bye Birdie (barring Marc Kudisch's Birdie) was light years beyond wretched and The Music Man (a totally great musical) is ruined by the total miscasting of nebbishy Matthew Broderick as "charismatic" Harold Hill.
i DONT like Camelot or Godspell..i love the stage version of Godspell but movie..no way. and i didnt like too much of rent. I dont even really consider Moulin Rounge(however you spell it) as a real musical. i hate when we go to districts and people wanna sing stuff from there i'm like HELLO ITS NOT A REAL MUSICAL! ugh. lol anyways ..... you guys def. pointed out some really bad ones~

"CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC, on the other hand, is wretched, and utterly unwatchable.".
I BEG YOUR PARDON! It's the best bad movie of all time. Valerie Perrine, Bruce Jenner and the Village People together in a camp classic.
I thought Rosario was the best one. She has a better singing voice than the hack I saw on tour. (Arianda something, if you want to know.)
MAME.
MAN OF LA MANCHA.
EVITA.
BELLS ARE RINGING.
PAINT YOUR WAGON.
There is a Man of LaMancha dvd, and I haven't got passed the first 5 minutes and I've had it for over 6 months.
For me, it's a 2 way tie between The Phantom of The Opera and The Music Man with Matthew Broderick.
Phantom was really boring when I saw it, and some of the dubbing (especially during Prima Donna) was horrendous. As for The Music Man, like someone already said, casting Matthew as Harold Hill was a huge mistake.
We were forced to watch that in my Spanish class. Awful. Just awful.

I couldn't even sit through 15 minutes of Man of La Mancha. It was on TV and my parents were watching it, so I sat and watched because I was kind of curious. When Peter O'Toole started singing...that was when I left the room. And then subsequently turned on the revival recording to hear Brian Stokes Mitchell.
A Chorus Line was just awful. I saw a local high school production of it that I enjoyed more than the movie. Plus, "The Music and the Mirror" was completely cut. Umm...
I can't stand the original Annie movie. I did enjoy the Disney remake from a few years ago, however.
But even bad musicals have their joys:
In "Man of La Mancha," if you forward past the parts with Peter O'Toole, Sophia Loren and James Coco, you can see some very good British actors doing a good job. Though, you have to watch the "Aldonza the Whore" to hear her "Off all the krewel bastiards, joo are the krooliest off aull!"
In "Mame," you get Robert Preston singing "Loving You" and you get to marvel just how they were able to film Lucy through all that vaseline and wonder just what made the costume designer to hate Bea Arthur so much that she dressed her in those hideous costumes!
In "Little Night Music", you get the glorious Diana Rigg and some nifty extra lyrics to "Ev'ry Day a Little Death"
"A Chorus Line," on the other hand, is another matter entirely. Even though it is not my favorite musical, I resented what Richard Attenborough did to that show. My resentment carried over to his other films. When I saw him in "Jurrasic Park," I was upset that his character doesn't get eaten by a dinosaur.
I thought that he should at least get eaten by a dinosaur for what he did to "A Chorus Line."
I've already given my choices for films with Broadway orgins; but the worst movie musical, ever, imo, is MOULIN ROUGE. In fact, I consider it the worst film of any kind. I've tried, more than once, to watch the entire thing, and I can't. I just can't.
Most of the movies on here (Annie, etc) I love just for being so bad.
Not A Chorus Line. That is just... I don't know what that is.

Camelot: I fell asleep!
Moulin Rouge is awesome and it has a lot of things to analyse. Its a great mixture of film history.
If Johnny Depp and Tim Burton go through with their Sweeney Todd thoughts, that should win all.
Annie is a terrific MOVIE musical, it was mostly based on the Comic Strip (hence having Punjab), I don't think when Huston directed it, he wanted it to be exactly like the stage show, the televised version made me puke.
Mame isn't THAT bad, mostly due to the lack of singing voice that the late Ms. Ball had, but overall it is a fun show to watch.
A Little Night Music is ok, but sadly Ms. Taylor should have been replaced.
The original South Pacific is very dull as is Paint Your Wagon.
Two terrible movie musicals that were never on the stage:
Sextette with an 80 year old Mae West
and Lost Horizon from 1973 with a Burt Baccarach(sp) score...it is hilarious.

The first Hairspray movie that came out was not so great
I'll take John Water's HAIRSPRAY film over the stage musical, anyday. But, it's completely beside the point, the original film is NOT a musical.

Anything that has Beyonce in it! I hope Dreamgirls isn't going to betray the real story and turn in it a for your oscar consideration, Beyonce Knowles movie. RENT sucked and I'm a renthead. The Producers...oy! The Phantom was wrong on soooo many levels..

Wow, everyone is being so nasty about it all. You people dont know a good movie musical when you ****ing see one. THE PRODUCERS was AMAZING, excusing Uma Thurman. That's just an INSULT to the play on Broadway. What would Gary Beach say? Shame.Shame.Shame.
