Okay--the mesa in Rent during "What You Own" was THE CORNIEST THING EVER! I was laughing hysterically when I saw it, I mean, COME ON! It was so, NOT right.
I think the worst movie musical is...High School Musical, if you count it as that. But I didn't like Phantom either. It was way too emotionless. I mean, Emmy Rossum has a great voice, but when I look at her when she's singing it's like, blank face.

Aww... I love the Guys and Dolls movie, even if Marlon Brando can't sing and they lowered "If I Were a Bell."
SWEET CHARITY is kind of bland. That's why it seemed that way.
mrsparker: we know that Summer Stock isn't a Broadway musical, but someone mentioned it earlier.
And Christoph, don't worry. The stage version of A Chorus Line is nothing like the film version. That's one of the reasons why it's so awful. So don't worry too much about the upcoming revival.
Some of these filmmakers need to realize, if the show isn't that good in the first place, don't try to make it better by turning it into a movie. It usually doesn't work.
Um... I really can't stand "Oliver!" Some parts are good, but most of it is just bad. "Jesus Christ Superstar" is another one of my less-favorite movie musicals. I also can't stand "Annie."

Evita, Madonna has no vocal power, they took away all of Che's character presence, and WTF was with the shower scenes in Peron's Latest Flame? DON'T GET ME STARTED WITH EVA SINGING ANOTHER SUITCASE IN ANOTHER HALL.

Things I agree with...
Definately A Chorus Line which is an absolute shame
Tommy-I could barely sit through it
Once Upon a Mattress...didn't hate it but I was sad that SO many good songs were cut out. And I wished the leads were younger. And I hated that dumb bit at the beginning with the girl in
Disney World looking for Princess Winifred and running into Carol Burnett...it was lame
Forum...not too horrible but kinda boring. Suprisingly Michael Crawford was not as strong of a singer then
Grease 2....no explanation
Things I disagree with...
I loved the original Annie! I love the new songs in it and it had an awesome cast!
I really liked the Producers...I wasnt a big Uma fan but I thought everything else was great. If only they could have kept King of Broadway in, I'll never understand that
Rent...i really loved this movie, I thought it was well filmed but I did hate the What You Own bit with Roger out in Santa Fe and I hated the fact they cut Goodbye Love and Halloween...they were very important to Mark's character
How to Succeed....I think this is a GREAT adaptation of the show!
I love it!
Phantom..I actually did like Phantom for the most part. Yeah it was kinda dissapointing at times and I wish they had a better cast but I didn't think they were horrible.d
did anyone mention The Music Man with Matthew Broderick? I love Matthew to death and I think he's a great actor...but he was definately NOT the best choice for Harold Hill
I really liked Chicago and Moulin Rouge as well.
I love Summer Stock!
Anyways that's my two cents.

i thought the TV version of The Music Man w/ Kristin Chenoweth was horrible...and also the TV version of Once Upon A Matress.

The TV version of "Annie" was a much better film than the John Huston version.
"Tommy" was not a movie based on a Broadway musical. It was based on a record and it came before the Broadway show.
That Threepenny movie from about a decade back was just dreadful.
The TV version of Bye Bye Birdie with Jason Alexander.
By Bye Birdie w/ Jason Alexander and Vanessa Williams is awful. but i loved it when i was like 7 so whatever.
'The Wiz' just didnt know what it wanted to be. the best parts of it for me were Ted Ross, Michael Jackson's great scarecrow, Mabel King as Evillene, and finally in like one of the most awesome performances ever captured onscreen, the immaculate Lena Horne as Glinda. I have the dvd and i just play her part i don even watch the movie. Diana knew she was dead ass wrong for singing 'home' like she did.
but if i had to say the 'worst', i would have to give it to 'A Chorus Line'. it was terrible. from the casting:
Alysson Reed as Cassie? She had that god-awful perm.
Michael Douglas was just wierd in this
that guy who plays Richie gets on my last damn nerve.
Whoever that fool was who played Diana. stupid heifer with her Pop-Pop mullet. I could go on and on
You would never know that this show was a masterpiece from watching this train wreck
and what exactly was the point of replacing 'Music and the Mirror' with that recycled 80s song? all those studio sounds to the music, and taking away all the awesome intros for the songs? god this movie was horrible. there were some good things though:
The lady who played Sheila was great in the role. I dont know her name because after this she probably didnt get a chance to work again.
The guy who plays Paul is ok too, but same situation above. i could rant forever about this but im getting angry so ill stop.
I thought rent was really well filmed(yes the what you own bit was tacky but very of the decade it was dipicting)Chris did a great job of the direction, very simple and era looking and the cast(if a little old)were great.
Producers was good to for what it was ,its a fun show and was a fun film
phantom was as overblown as the show so again did what it said on the tin(butler was a little odd though but emmy rossum was great)
As for madonna had no vocal power in her voice ...rubbish
She played that role really well and sounded great ,i think some people just knock this woman in her films coz of who she is but come on credit where credit is due she was great(goldon globe winner)
A Chorus Line
ruined one of the best musicals ever made
Oh, please allow me to add the made for TV South Pacific with Harry Connick Jr. and Glenn Close. A favorite musical with two favorite performers... and I just had to turn it off.

A CHORUS LINE
MAN OF LA MANCHA
HELLO, DOLLY!
CAROUSEL
MAME (my eyes!)
Here's a thought: what musicals were improved in their film versions?
OH, WHAT A LOVELY WAR! is my first thought.
The television remake of SOUTH PACIFIC was a train-wreck. Horrible on every level.

It's a tie between RENT and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
Also, the original theatrical film version of SOUTH PACIFIC leaves a lot to be desired. It has questionable casting, direction and garish color-filters, which ruin the, otherwise, breathtaking on-location photography. However, by comparison to Glenn Close's television version, it is a masterpiece. Glenn Close, as far as I'm concerned, has no musicality (her long stint in Up With People, nothwithstanding). I've seen her in SUNSET (and I thought my ears were going to explode from the horrid sounds she was producing), and that SP, although better singing than SB, it was still pretty lousy. I find it depressing that she has a Tony for a musical, while, arguably, the greatest musical talent of the 20th century, Julie Andrews, does not. Depressing.

A Chorus Line...AAAAHHHH!!!
Hello Dolly! Babs is good, but TO YOUNG!!!
Rent...hated it.
Phantom..HATED it.
And I DESPISE South Pacific, and haven't even seen it.
There are two I am not too impressed with as movies. Phantom of the Opera (booooring) and Rent (don't hate for the Rent opinion).

For musicals from Broadway sources: A Chorus Line is just plain bad. I'm also not a fan of Flower Drum Song.
For movie musicals not from Broadway sources, I think that "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" is one of the worst movies ever made. Even the Village People/Bruce Jenner's 'Can't Stop the Music' has some fun campy moments. But the BeeGees doing covers of the Beatles is just plain criminal.
Not being such a Beatles fan, I had no issue with the BeeGees covers. CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC, on the other hand, is wretched, and utterly unwatchable.
