I'd still rather be Sondheim. Lopez seems to like writing about and working with Clitoris (clitori?). Sondheim has a PGOT and his by the look of his hot young squeeze Sondheim's P probably has GOT a lot of recognition recently so he has the last laugh anyway!

I don't...understand what's happening.

Is there seriously a discussion about Sondheim not getting EGOT before Lopez???!? Stephen Sondheim has had a lifetime of opportunities to work in television AND FILM! He has literally watched musical theatre come in and out of style on television for decades.

BTW, does he have any other Oscar nominations? It's kind of surprising the amount of films that have been made of his work and only Dick Tracy gets a win. Maybe it's not his thing.

Alan Menken is another almost-EGOT that could easily get wins writing music for television.

Not really. Songs and scores are only eligible for Oscars if they were written specifically for the movie. It doesn't matter how many of his musicals have been made into films, or how good they are, they are not eligible unless Sondheim writes a completely new song to shove into the story for the sole purpose of winning an Oscar -- and he is not the type of songwriter to do that. He is a stickler for songs serving the story only when they are necessary; it is why he has said that he thinks FORUM is one of his worse shows, despite it being one of the most popular and successful.

If you just consider his original film work, he has contributed to:
THE BIRDCAGE (one song)
DICK TRACY (five songs)
THE LAST OF SHEILA (cowrote screenplay)
REDS (one song, and I believe some of the score)
THE SEVEN-PER-CENT SOLUTION (one song)
STAVISKY (score)

So, yeah, not that surprising.

She has only won an honorary Tony. Noncompetitive awards are generally not counted towards the EGOT. If she ever came back to Broadway, then maybe.

Yes, Rodgers was the first, with his Emmy in 1962. The link that best12bars provided lists the EGOT winners in chronological order, with the years they first won each award.

Apparently Sondheim stands in his backyard wearing a tattered robe and screams "LOPEZ!!" into the night sky while his dreams lay in tatters at his feet.

Or something like that.

That, Eris, is called a "song moment."
