Wow... Barnes didnt like it !!! What a shock !!!!
I love how he writes his reviews, basically without a single mention of a castmember !!!!!
Really pathetic. I dont mind if you dont like a show, but can the review go higher than 3rd grade comprehension!??

In the Post? At 3rd grade they'll lose a lot of their readers. LOL. :P
Already laminated the picture from the Times and put it on the bulletin board in my classroom. The one behind my desk which is mine. I'm good, but even I can't make Xanadu fit our clss theme of "Under the Sea". Should have waited to use that until The Little Mermaid is open! Hee!

Another positive - Hartford Courant:
http://www.courant.com/entertainment/stage/reviews/hc-xanadurev.artjul11,0,5154861.story
The most perfect line is this:
"Best of all is Butler, who probably will not get a Tony nomination, though she far surpasses Laura Bell Bundy, whose sinister smile beckons from ubiquitous posters shilling for "Legally Blonde: The Musical.""
For the record, unless Patti in Gypsy transfers, I'd already wager money on Kerry's very good odds of winning (a Tony).

im sure i read a couple of mixed who gave it like 3 out of 5 etc so i would change them from positive to mixed.
well done to the cast though, even as someone who didn't think much of the show im thrilled for the cast and crew as well as the Xanadu fans.

Clive Barnes is a terrible critic, but I agree with him on this one.
What about John Simon?

Because Barnes started out as a ballet critic and soon, with no experience, became the man with the poison pen at the NY Times.
He couldn't review theater then, he can't review theater now (IMO).

Today's my birthday, and to have a show (esp one that I've been interested in) get so many good reveiws on the eve of my Birthday just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Congrats Beane and Co., you rock!

He's probably the worst critic working today. If I tried to count the legendary shows he has hated on both my hands, I would run out of fingers.
However, I do agree with him on Xanadu.

Actually, as crazy as it might sound, I am "happy" for lack of better word that some didn't care for it as well as some posters. When reviews come out that are all in one direction, while nice, I think raises expectations to a level that sometimes can never be lived up to. But when people are able to see that while many loved something, it wasn't for everyone, it adds a "realness" or credibility to the entire critical arena. No show, movie, book, cd, etc will ever be adored by EVERYONE. What would be the fun in that anyway?

Craig, I think we had a sense of that prior to the official reviews given the varied responses of our BWW members. Looks like the critics mirrored our opinions.

random question for those making the early Tony predictions- I've never seen the film The Catered Affair that the musical's going to be based on, is Leslie Kritzer's role a supporting/featured one, rather than a leading one? Because I didn't see her mentioned in any predictions, so I was curious.
and this:
In the Post? At 3rd grade they'll lose a lot of their readers. LOL. :P
cracked me up because, when I moved to the city, this is actually how a friend of mine explained how to make snap-judgments about people by what they read on the train:
Daily News: high school reading level
NY Times: graduated from college
and so I *always* think 4th grade reading level when I see the Post now.

SeanMartin and I are the two at the bar across the street from The Helen Hayes theatre crying into our drinks and asking "Where did we go wrong?"
As for Barnes, I know a small theater company in Canada which built a new headquarters and officially named the urinal in the men's room after a certain nasty critic, with a brass plaque and all. I guess it was their way of giving back in kind.....
I just added Xanadu to my list of must sees, he said penitently.

What does that mean, mominator?
I'd love to see Cheyenne stay as long as they want!
But, I know James wants to come back as soon as he can.
I bet it was killing James not to be onstage with the cast last night.
I saw the pictures from opening night with him and Cheyenne.
Poor guy.
