They should have done XANADU....but, I have to say even though it was a poor decision in song, the performance was pretty good.
I was about to say XANADU as well. It can really show how much fun the show is.
I thought the XANA-number came off great. Hoping it sold some tickets. Jackson's performance was a DEFINITE vocal highlight, (along w LuPone, obviously).
"All Over the World" would have been the perfect song. It showcases the whole cast, is incredibly fun/catchy, and would've gone a long way to sell the show.
Oh I have to say that Lily Tomlin introducing the show was great. When she walked out and said, "That was my homage to Marisa Tomei," I laughed so hard.
"I don't know what anyone saw in this. Cheyenne was fine but the number was lackluster, to be kind."
That's how I felt. It certainly did not make me want to go see it.

Xanadu's number was awesome. When they first announced they'd perform "Don't Walk Away" I was a little reluctant, but it came off great.
And TDH, why would the "haters" like Wicked and Rent? Kind of random. I like both Wicked and Xanadu. Am I "hater"?
I never said a word about the performance. All of the actors were in fine form.
All I was commenting on was what I thought was a poor choice in number.

I'll try to understand- What did you like about this number? I really don't like the song (at all) and thought the cast looked like they were milling around- the blocking (choreography?) was really unfocused. It was cute when Kira roller skated backward and Tony Roberts in the audience was fun but...I am trying but I just don't get it.
"Cheyenne and Kerry's beauty stole the show..."
this pisses me off (the person who posted this comment doesn't.. just the sentiment).
Who cares? Everyone in the Bway community is beautiful somehow... and the Tony's are about BUSINESS and selling tickets.
WHY did they not have Mary Testa & Jackie Hoffman do "Evil Woman?"
THAT would have brought down the house, AND it would have made the lampooning-nature of the show clear.
Everyone has seen Cheyenne Jackson in short shorts a million times. Jackie and Mary are amazing and would have sold tickets: the whole POINT of the Tony Awards.
;(
You don't think it would have been odd to showcase a number that doesn't feature the leads? Especially since one was nominated for best actress?
I think they chose a good number that worked with little to no setup and showcased the strong vocals along with some of the humor of the show as well.
All Over The World needs more of an explanation and I think would have fallen more flat. Xanadu might have been a good choice - but not showcased both Kerry and Cheyenne vocally as well.
i actually thought it was the most solid of all the Best Musical nominees, even though it wasn't my favorite show.

Cheyenne is a hell of a talent, and he has GREAT legs, but I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to ever see this show after watching that number.
Hated it.

I love the song (it's actually one of my favorite songs from the original soundtrack as well). Cheyenne's performance was fantastic. I thought the energy of the entire ensemble was absolutely contagious. I actually like the choreography and find it a perfect fit for the song. Honestly, I really can't think of anything I don't like about the number.

Mary and Jackie are hilarious in that number, but they are not the stars of the show nor is it a number that would really give a homebound audience much clue about the show itself other than it is a comedy featuring a couple of wacky broads.

Speak for yourself. I love Jackie and Mary, but Cheyenne in short-shorts is an entirely different matter. Shorts aside, Cheyenne holds his own against those two and proved that he is a force to be reckoned with. The guy has it all.
FUNNY STORY: at the rehearsal for the awards sunday morning, Lily Tomlin COMPLETELY forgot Cheyenne's name. It was HILARIOUS.
I thought it was a wonderful showcase for Cheyenne, but the number sucked. It looked sloppy and unfocused, and reeked of community theater, as did Grease.

Not goingto lie (I'm big enough to admit it). I was blown away with Kerry Butler. I have never been impressed with her. But she was absolutely amazing. It really wants me to go see the show. Again, something I've never had any desire to do. I personally apologize to Kerry Butler for anything I've ever said. She has one (probably more) fan!
I didn't find anything wrong with the number. Sure there could've been better choices but I think they still rocked. Cheyenne sounded amazing and it was cute and fun.

The musical performance for Xanadu did nothing to entice me to want to see it...E.V.E.R. On the contrary, it thoroughly turned me off of even considering it. I wouldn't even accept free tickets to it.
I remember refusing to watch it when it came out as a movie back in the day with Olivia Newton-John, and giving it a B-Way treatment has not changed my mind.

That's one thing you NEVER need worry about.
The Xanadu number worked very well out of context and I thought it was the most effective performance of the night. And that comes from someone who has not seen this show.
I thought it curious that they chose to perform a song that showcased Cheyenne Jackson (who was not nominated) rather than Kerry Butler (who WAS nominated).
But given that the Cubby Bernstein episode 6 (featuring Nathan Lane and semi-nude cast) had over 500,000 views on YouTube (where the others had 20-30,000 views), perhaps the producers feel that Cheyenne in short shorts and a tank top is the real selling point of the show. (And he DID sing really well. And I love Kerry hopping around on one roller skate in that number--so funny!)
