So was "Our Kind Of Love" removed from the revised Beautiful Game (I forget what it's called now)?
very pretty albeit disappointing to hear a three time recycled tune.
I know that something similar was done with Music of the Night in the original POTO though...having previously been "Married Man" before becoming the smash hit it is now in Phantom. I suppose ALW is hoping for the same approach to work again.
I think "Our Kind Of Love" is gorgeous and very touching. I really wish he would have written something else.
---Beautiful melody. I think the lyrics are better than those of the silly "poppish" "Til I Hear You Sing," but they are generic. Christine could sing them to the Phantom or the Phantom to Christine or Romeo to Juliet or Juliet to Romeo or the boy next door to the girl down the block or...
It's being generic could make it a good pull-out song. I don't know if it achieved that when the tune was in Beautiful Game.
I have been dismayed at the production of a sequel to The Phantom of the Opera since it was first announced. I knew from the first that I would be very likely to like some of the music even if I hate the concept so this lovely melody, well performed, has had no effect on my feelings about the sequel. I have no plans to see it although i will probably buy the CDs.
The song *was* removed from the Beautiful Game remake (Boys in the Photograph), and I do not believe "The Married Man" ever appeared in a show.

The high note is a B5, I took my tuner to it. B5 sounds very high but it's easy for a soprano to sing, definitely not like the brutal title song cadenza that requires sustained A5, B5, several C6s, and then a leap to the E6.
Anyway, the song is really cheesey (pretty melody, I thought the lyrics put it over the top) and so... generic feeling. It doesn't feel like it fits the characters at all.

I've always loved the melody, the lyrics are a major improvement, and she sounds AMAZING! I'm sooooo excited for this show!
I think it's the constant use of the word "love" that makes me squirm. For me, love songs are more affecting when they don't use the actual word "love" often. Maybe once or twice in a chorus, or a verse. For me, it's just more affecting that way. When it's in almost every other line, the song becomes cheesy. Pretty melody, and Sierra sounded wonderful. Idk, the only thing I'm REALLY looking forward to is Bob Crowley's sets.
I enjoyed this melody as The Heart Is Slow To Learn and as Our Kind Of Love. I agree that the repetition of "love" is a bit much. ALW already has a song addressing the apects of "love" - Love Changes Everything. That's another great tune that grates on me simply because "love" is overly used.
Anyway, Love Never Dies is not nearly annoying as to me as Love Changes Everything.
I'm excited for this show. Bad or Good, I'm going to want to see this for myself. (God, I hope it's good.)
I really like Sierra Boggess' voice, and this wasn't really a terrible song. Someone on ATC pointed out that it sounds an awful lot like the theme from The Apartment, though.
The Apartment
The lyrics for any of the incarnations of this song have never been that good, but the melody is simply gorgeous and always makes up for it. "Love never dies once it's inside you" is particularly... oddly phrased.
I personally love it, she sings so beautifully and the song is touching and is very Christine.
I really think that this show will end up surprising all of us and become a big hit!
I think that was rather lovely. I think the jury is still out until we hear it with full orchestration within it's context in the show, but really, i very much enjoyed that.
And let's just get real. Sierra Boggess has quite a gift with that voice.
Too bad Sierra wasn't around to play Christine in the movie of "Phantom." She has the looks and the voice to be sensational on the big screen. Ah, well ...
As for this song, meh.
It's pretty, but also pretty forgettable. Not a strong melody, even by Lloyd Webber's standards. Of course, when they put a huge string section (some of it canned) behind her, it'll sound like Puccini again ... or Verdi, most likely.
Warmed-over Verdi.
She sure knows how to sell it, though. They picked the right gal for the job.
EDIT: I agree with the person who says the first few notes and chords sound like the theme to "The Apartment." Very much so. Just like "Music of the Night" sounds like "Come To Me, Bend To Me" from Brigadoon.

Elaine Paige has just played "Till I Hear You Sing" from the CD, with a piano intro I haven't heard before. Here's the link http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00qfyjt/Elaine_Paige_on_Sunday_31_01_2010/ (44 minutes, 30 seconds in)
Sierra is certainly very special- and that might set up some challenges when replacements are called upon.
I was just about to point out THE APARTMENT theme. You can hear the resemblance better in this clip, particularly in the first minute:

BTW: I recently discovered that ALW/RIce had written a song called "Down Thru' Summer" for a certain Ross Hannaman in the mid-60s. Later they reused the entire melody in EVITA ("And if ever I go too far...", "At the watering-holes of the well-to-do...", "What I'd give for a hundred years..."):

Sierra = impressive
Melody = repetitive and dull
Lyrics = better than average but certainly not spectacular
Overall performance = good
Expectations for LND based on this performance = not soaring above the clouds but perhaps at least a hovercraft

I like Glenn Slater, but my God, those are some cornball lyrics. Embarrassing. Sometimes I suspect that ALW intentionally forces sucktastic lyrics out of his co-writers so that the music sounds more impressive by comparison.
I hear he also previewed some songs from his next show (after Love Never Dies).
His next show will include the hits Don't Cry For Me Sergeant Tina and I Don't Know How To Love Her.

post-Rice, I'm sure ALW has had enormous influence on what his lyricists write. He does favor "purple prose" to go with his Puccini-esque music.
I just didn't think the song went anywhere (except higher). As pretty as it is, he could've shaved off a verse and it would've been fine.
Anxious to hear the rest of the score though. I'm sure there are some original nuggets in there.
Sierra is fantastic but the song is dull.
"I just didn't think the song went anywhere (except higher)."
LOL
Sporkgoddess, the high note is a Bb5, not B5 (the key is B-flat). She just goes sharp on the note.

That would explain why it seemed to fall in between Bb and B (didn't quite hit B but was higher than a Bb), thanks.
And, WOW, that theme song to The Apartment does sound like the song. It's almost suspicious IMO.
