You guys were right about LA CAGE last time when I asked your opinion about choosing a show. Let's see if you pull through again. Which one?
*Promises, Promises
*Lend Me A Tenor
*American Idiot
Of those, I've only seen Tenor and Idiot (I am going to try to see Promises next weekend). Both were great, IMHO. In the end, though, I would have to recommend American Idiot. The energy of the cast, the staging, and the overall experience left me exhilarated. I saw the matinee and could have easily returned to see it again in the evening.
Promises, no contest!
You say Promises was good? I just had a friend who saw it and absolutely hated it (Quote "Katie Finnernan, though fantastic, isn't even worth buying a ticket to this. She got the most applause.)

When you, or anyone creates this type of threads, it will always create that kind of reaction. Some people love the shows that some others hate. So that's why you should see them one by one and decide which one you prefer. You can't really trust anyone, because we are all individuals and even if you agree with a person when it comes to most shows, there always will be be shows you disagree on.
I haven't seen Lend Me a Tenor, although it is on my list. If I had to choose between AI and Promises it'd be AI one hundred times over. I had a much more emotional response to AI...which is what I like most in my theater outings.
Muscle...I'm just looking for a consensus...
If you saw my picture, I am a student with low income, so I cannot afford to see them all, so I just wanted an opinion so I can decide which show will be worthwhile on my stretched dollar.
But muscle's point is that there won't BE a consensus. WE can't know which is the best way to spend your money.
With as few responses as you have already split....there is no consensus...and that will likely continue.
MY thoughts? I liked AI for it's performers, but I didn't even come close to loving it. I thought at first I wanted to see it a second time to see if I would connect on an emotional level....but then I realized: I had no desire to give them more of my money.
Tenor: I liked very much. I will admit that the Original Produciton holds a very special place in my heart...and it would have been tough to top that. This is also the first to leave b'way...so this would get my vote -- you might find another opportunity to see either of the others.
I haven't seen Promises --- and I have no desire to.
Exactly what drama said!
By the way, you should totally see Promises, Promises drama! I thought it was the most enjoyable new show of the season actually.
I would see American Idiot. I absolutely loved it. High energy performances and music.
Just my opinion.
If you had told me last fall that I would see RAGTIME, Promises, Finians, American Idiot, and La Cage aux Folles, and that when all the curtains came down, RAGTIME would be may favorite, I'd have said you were on crack. You would be right though....which just goes to reinforce what others have said about having to see things for yourself, and then decide.
i think it depends what kind of show you are most interested in seeing. I have only seen Promises out of the three, and i would personally highly recommend it. Sean Hayes is wonderful, Katie Finneran is amazing, and the opportunity to see Kristin Chenoweth onstage is an honor, in my opinion. I thought she did a great job with what she was given. In all honesty the role just isn't that great, but Kristin is wonderful. All in all, the show is a great fluffy comedy. If you are in the mood for a great laugh with big dance numbers and the like, then I would recommend you should definitely choose Promises, but if you are looking for a show with an emotional effect, than I would follow people's recommendations to see American Idiot. I personally enjoy the fluffy fun musicals more so than the emotional rock-musicals (exception being n2n) but that is totally personal preference.
