I know this is a subject that has been discussed many times before, but it truly is one that never gets old for me.
HELLO DOLLY is, in my opinion, one of Broadway's most radiant treasures- a nearly perfect blend of music, comedy, love and genuine Broadway flair.
I hope and pray it is brought back to Broadway soon with a production that does the source material justice.
But you can't have a fabulous production of HELLO DOLLY with out a FABULOUS Dolly.
So... who are you thinking, and why?

I'd like to see what Reba McEntire could do with it.
I'm dying to see Bernadette do this. But I would definitely have no objections to Reba.

Already saw mine last summer in Boston. Rachel York played Dolly and won an IRNE for it. She was fabulous! They added "Love, Look in My Window" for her. Sublime.
I can't wait to see her Witch in "Into the Woods" there this month!
Come to think of it, SHE'd be my choice for Reno in "Anything Goes" instead of Sutton Foster. I've read she was great at Reprise!
Darn it. I hit reply after waiting a bit and my choice is already selected. I would love to see Bernadette Peters in the role. Age-wise she's kind of in between the two other suggestions (Gaynor and Reba), but she's still perfect for the role. I can even hear her singing the title song in my head (I should probably get that checked out, but still - it sounds pretty good), along with Motherhood. I would also like to see Reba in the role.
Heck, if I had my way, Hello Dolly would turn into the next Chicago Revival. Now before you all threaten bodily harm, what I mean is that I'd love a revival of Dolly to open and stay open long enough to have many people come along and fill the splendid role of Dolly Levi. Only I wouldn't let the Weisslers touch it with a ten-foot pole. This way we could get some truly remarkable people to come along and show off in one of the most elegant roles of all.
Barbra Streisand!!!
....too soon?

I still think Miss Piggy would be great. And it's not a joke.

Best Dolly ever.. even surpassing carol....Florence Lacey. I saw her do it when she was covering Carol Channing . She went on the one time Carol missed. And she only missed to attend the Tonys. If my memory serves me right it was when the tour was in Orange County.

^ I've *never* heard about Kaye doing the role...or even covering Carol Channing.
I'd like to see Reba or Patti do it.
I saw both Carol Channing & Pearl Bailey in the role . . . the part "belongs to Carol" but don't think you could EVER see a more thrilling performance than Pearl Bailey. She was magnificent . . . ! a 5 minute standing ovation! -- she even did 4 more songs after the curtain call. But if a revival were to happen, I wouldn't mind seeing Liza!
She sure did. It was the very last big tour of Dolly. She had the other female lead ( can't remember the characters name but sang "Ribbons down my back)" and she stood by for Channing. You can hear her in the tours cast recording.
And I wouldn't mind seeing Liza either.
SH*T. My bad. It was Florence Lacey. Oh lord. Let me go back to the weed thread.. So sorry.
Haha, DAME, it's all about that awful reefer you're taking :-P
Love the Reba suggestion, and of course Bernadette would be great. My dream revival Dolly however would be Donna Murphy of course I would also love to see what Queen Latifah could do with the role but I guess she has no interest in committing to an 8 shows a week schedule.
Kate Baldwin was a delightful Mrs. Molloy in Papermill's DOLLY!
Though she may not have the name recognition of many previously mentioned, I would love to see Debbie Gravitte as Dolly.
Bette anyone?
I also think Kudisch would make an excellent Horace.
Agree with Queen saw her sing title song on Living Single and made me wonder what she could do with the role.
Additionally: Christine Ebersole, Midler, Peters, CZJ, Donna Murphy,Faith Prince
Horace-Kudish
Irene- Kerry Butler, Block, Ashley Brown, Baldwin, O'Hara, Mcdonald
Minnie- Up and comer
Cornelius- Creel, Swenson,Harris, Panaro
Barnaby-up and comer
Bette? I kinda like that idea! As with Reba, and Bernadette. What about Valerie Harper? She's not the best singer, but then again, neither was Channing.
I'd think Liza would be better as Mame. It would be the closest thing to Judy playing the role. Even if we don't get a full production of a Liza 'Mame", a concert would do fine.

Florence Henderson would also make a terrific Dolly.
